The included faceplates show off Asahi's wide range of emotions: a gentle smile, a focused glare, and a worried expression. About Asahi Azumane

Asahi Azumane is a third year at Karasuno high school and the volleyball team's ace. At the beginning of the series, Asahi was absent from the team, still ashamed from a devastating loss. However, he grows more confident in his abilities as Karasuno progresses toward the National stage.

About Asahi Azumane: Background

Asahi is tall, muscular, and looks much older than he is. As a result, he has a "dangerous" reputation that starkly differs from his real personality. Actually, Asahi is fairly sensitive, considerate, and self-conscious about his abilities.

Asahi left the volleyball team after a match in which he couldn't land a single spike. He felt both responsible for the embarrassing loss and unworthy of his position as the team's ace. Over time, he learns to trust his teammates and his own skills to grow as a player. His teammates still jokingly give him the nickname "glass-hearted ace." At Nationals, the announcers give him the nickname "Samurai Guy, in reference to his top bun and intimidating expression.

About Asahi Azumane: Abilities

As Karasuno's ace, Asahi is particularly skilled in spiking and other offensive plays. He has enough power even at the beginning of the series to blast through a triple block if he really tried. As the series progresses, he harnesses more control over his power and uses this to develop different block evasion techniques.

One of his most useful block evasion techniques involves a time-delayed spike. Using this method, Asahi briefly pauses after his run-up to reach the peak of his jump when the blockers start to fall after their jump. Koushi Sugawara names this attack the "block crusher." By the Nationals arc, Asahi has also developed a dangerously powerful jump serve. He starts his serves at 70% of his power and gradually increases up to 100% by the middle of the game. His 100% jump serves are extremely difficult to receive, even for the most skilled defenders in the series.

Other Important Haikyu!! Characters

As a member of Karasuno, Asahi is a pivotal character throughout the series. His relationships with the other third year and the second years informed Karasuno's standing at the series' beginning. These bonds grow stronger over the volleyball season, making Karasuno a formidable team.

Yu Nishinoya

Yu Nishinoya is a second year at Karasuno High School and the libero of the volleyball team. Nishinoya has been named one of the best liberos in Japan by several characters. However, his disruptive, unruly personality prevents him from attending the prestigious youth camps in the series.

Nishinoya and Asahi have a foil relationship, in personality and as libero and ace. Where Asahi is reserved and shy, Nishinoya is brash and loud. Despite criticizing the "weaker" elements of Asahi's personality, Nishinoya believes in him wholeheartedly as the team's ace. He feels partially responsible for Asahi's departure, as he didn't receive the rebounds and provided Asahi with more spiking opportunities. Together, they serve as one of the many comedy duos in Haikyu!!

Daichi Sawamura

Daichi Sawamura is a third year at Karasuno and serves as the volleyball team captain. He covers many of the defensive holes in the team, especially early in the series. He is generally mature, confident, and focused, but he can lose his temper with the unruly underclassmen. Daichi, Asahi, and Sugawara have been close friends since their first year.

A running gag throughout the series is that Daichi is forgiving and understanding with everyone aside from Asahi. He chastises Asahi for his meek personality, making fun of how it contrasts with his strong appearance. However, they have deep trust and respect for each other and vowed to make it to Nationals together before they graduated. Asahi is still scared of Daichi at times, especially when Daichi is angry.
