Born from a collaboration between the district of Shibuya and Tokyu Corporation, Shibuya Pixel Art is an art festival held between July 16 and 31, 2017, during which the streets of Shibuya are dressed in pixel art!

For this collaboration, eight artists were asked to create an art piece depicting one of the eight lucky gods (hachifukujin). This original figure by Yukinori Dehara isn’t your usual pixel art. We often think of pixel art in narrow terms, but if you really look at it, everything is made up of pixels, even cities! Standing 10” tall, this piece uses paper clay and is made with a rough finish to preserve its handcrafted feel.

Featuring Ebisu, the god of wealth and prosperity as well as the patron of the fishermen, this figure also showcases Dehara’s love for food with the eye-catching cuttlefish-shaped hat decorated with shrimp as well as the huge fish in its hands. Dehara also made him as an approachable guy who’d be fun to hang out with. What did he see that made his eyes open with such wonder?

Also included as a bonus is an original zine by Dehara titled The Homeless.

Born in bonito, Kochi Prefecture in 1974 and raised on beer, Yukinori Dehara is a figure illustrator based in Tokyo who makes about 300 figures and drinks 300 liters of beer a year. He is often inspired by food and animals, which is reflected in his original characters as well as the peculiar way in which he describes his origins.
