One of the most famous characters Sega has produced and known for his supersonic speeds, Sonic is a character loved ever since he debuted in Rad Mobile in 1991. Sonic is portrayed as the fastest being alive. He is able to run at speeds higher than Mach 1 and can run both forwards and backward with ease. His ability to run at a breakneck pace is due to training on a high-tech treadmill until he could surpass the speed of sound. The fastest speed he has reached is said to be 761mph.
Sonic's iconic footwear, the red sneakers with white stripes, plays a vital role in his running. The shoes have been specially made to protect his feet from the heat produced due to the friction he produces from running at high speeds.
He also has a variety of other abilities depending on the game or movie he is featured in. Many of his powers are a take on a hedgehog's tendency to roll into a tight ball. His Sonic Spin Attack is one of his most used offensive tactics. When Sonic jumps, he will curl up and spin around, damaging any enemies that come in close range. This ability was further amplified in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 introduced an Insta-Shield, allowing Sonic to surround himself with a force field, giving him momentary protection and increasing his attack range. He can also attack while in the ball shape. By allowing momentum to do its job, this attack becomes deadly and deals a large amount of damage.
One of Sonic's major weaknesses is his inability to swim. He is able to run or bounce across the surface of the water but cannot swim. In most Sonic the Hedgehog games, if Sonic lands in the water, it equals death for him.
Depending on the media, Sonic's usual abilities are enhanced by using a variety of items. For example, the Chaos Emerald will often feature throughout the comics and games and gives him the ability to transform into his Super Sonic form.

Dr. Eggman
Dr. Eggman, also known as Doctor Ivo Robotnik, is an insane scientist who Sonic continuously goes up against. The two are arch enemies, and Sonic has stopped every attempt Dr. Eggman has made in destroying the world. While they consider themselves enemies, on occasion, they have worked together to save the world from a more significant threat. However, Dr. Eggman's underlying motive is that he wants to rule the world.
Shadow the Hedgehog
Shadow Sonic is one of Sonics' biggest rivals. The two continuously fight and argue with each other. They have both contrasting and similar opinions, which means they protect and look out for each other. While they consider each other rivals, their rivalry is based on respect for each other.
