Serialized from 2001 to 2010, Fullmetal Alchemist is a wildly popular manga series written and illustrated by the talented Hiromu Arakawa. It was published by Square Enix and also received a variety of adaptations, most notably two anime television series: Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Its protagonists are Edward Elric and his younger brother Alphonse who are both two young alchemists. Their universe operates based on the supposed “Law of Equivalent Exchange,” where to gain something, you must lose something of equal value. Not truly understanding this, they try to use alchemy to resurrect their mother after her tragic death, and during the failed attempt, Edward loses his leg and arm while Alphonse loses his entire body. The series follows them on their journey to find the mythical Philosopher’s Stone in order to restore their bodies.
