Anime
The Fate franchise revolves around Holy Grail Wars which are fought by Servants that are summoned and controlled by Masters in the hopes of being the last pair standing so that the Holy Grail will grant them any wish. It is a world of violent magecraft with powerful mages who have strong magical lineages. A few such families regularly participate in the Holy Grail Wars, of which there are multiple spanned throughout the franchise, but no names also find their way into the wars. The Servants are usually powerful heroes or villains from history (though from the future is possible also) that are summoned into the modern day and bound by a contract with their Master. Each Master is also given three Command Seals which they can use to force their Servants into doing things that they otherwise wouldn’t going as far as even commanding them to kill themselves. The franchise is considered a dark fantasy, action, tragedy.
Characters
The franchise’s main characters fall under Servants who are summoned by Masters who control them in order to win the Holy Grail War. Servants can be heroes from history such as one of the franchise’s most popular characters, Saber from Fate/Zero (as well as other series) who is the heroic spirit of Artoria Pendragon, also known as King Arthur. Less often Servants are horrible villains from history such as Caster of Fate/Zero who is Gilles de Rais, also known a “Bluebeard” who was a serial killer of children in the Fate lore. He also appears in other series. Minor characters include members of the Church and Mage’s Association as well as hitmen, childhood friends of characters, family of characters, and more.
Creation and History of Adaptations
The Fate franchise began with the visual novel Fate/stay night developed by TYPE-MOON in 2004 and was written by Kinoko Nasu who also founded the video game company with Takashi Takeuichi. Since its creation, there have been numerous successful anime, anime films, anime shorts, anime specials, arcade games, light novels, visual novels, manga, sound dramas, and a very popular mobile game (Fate/Grand Order) made, on which a variety of talented artists, writers, studios, designers, animators, and more have worked. The “Nasuverse” is the term for the universe in which any works set in the Fate universe are a part of including those that have their own unique characters and plots.
