Figures and Merch

Nendoroids are a series of figures with a ‘chibi’ style, developed by GOOD SMILE COMPANY. The creation of the series itself is specifically credited to one 'Tsuyoshi Oda (Oda-P)'. The figures are painted and not created to scale of any of their originals' specifications with articulated components for posing. Nendoroid figures generally sit at approximately 100mm in height although there are exceptions to this rule as the series has gone on. There have been over 1000 Nendoroids released, with newer figures being released every month. Nendoroids often come with extra parts, such as alternate face plates to show different expressions on the figure, or prop pieces that relate to the figure.

The first Nendoroids were released in February of 2006 and the particular charm of the figure steadily grew in popularity and demand to the point that it is today. Over time the Nendoroid brand has spawned a variety of Nendoroid adjacent products such as the smaller 'Nendoroid Petite' figures, extra tools and display options in the 'Nendoroid More' series', plushies based specifically around Nendoroid designs, play sets, and even video games that revolve specifically around Nendoroid based products.

Listed at the end of this page are a series of pages that show Nendoroids of their respective series.

Specifications

Nendoroid figures are made from acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (more commonly known as ABS) and polyvinyl chloride (more commonly known as PVC). Their heads are overly large with a smaller (in comparison) body that gives them the cute and immediately recognizable Nendoroid appearance. Nendoroid products frequently come with extra or alternative body parts and face plates to allow for a range of different poses and expressions. Nendoroids in the primary line of products typically stand at 10cm or 100mm tall. The joints in the shoulders, hips, and neck typically also allow for some degree of motion in order to facilitate posing.

Due to the relatively uniform design of all Nendoroids, many components such as face plates are interchangeable between different Nendoroids that don't even come from the same series. To that end accessories, extra parts, and extra components are technically usable with potentially completely disparate characters which adds to the charm for Nendoroid collectors.

Related Products

There are a series of Nendoroid related products that aren't part of the primary line of figures.

  • Nendoroid Petite - This series looks a lot like the primary line and obviously shares design roots, but is roughly half the size and are approximately 6.5cm each. They tend to sell for much cheaper in blind boxes that each contain a single random character. They are also sold as complete sets.
  • Nendoroid More - This series of product began as a project for new graduates joining Good Smile Company. Beginning in 2012, this line of products was targeted at quality of life additions to Nendoroids which made it easier and more enjoyable to display the products. This initiative has spawned specially designed clips and suction cup stands as well as decorative parts for various Nendoroids.
  • Nendoroid Playsets - 'Phat! Company' produces and manufactures specialized and custom small dioramic rooms to act as display areas for various Nendoroids.
  • Nendoroid Plus - The Nendoroid designs are quite popular and have been used in quite a few other official products that are not specifically Nendoroids themselves. Items such as rubber straps, plushies, and charms that utilize Nendoroid designs in this way are known as Nendoroid Plus items. These products tend to be released by companies other than Good Smile Company themselves.

History

The very first Nendoroid sold was a figure of the character 'Neko Arc' from the doujin visual novel 'Tsukihime'. This figure was released at the 2006 'Wonder Festival'. Neko Arc being a joke character in the game and series lent itself well to the super deformed look that would eventually become a staple for all Nendoroids. In fact, many of the early Nendoroids (especially the 'Type/Moon' related ones) appear as joke variations of themselves.

While originally the Nendoroid projects were worked on by Tsuyoshi Oda, it is now handled by a number of people who are collectively known as 'Nendoron'. With over ten people typically handling planning and production of a single figure, the company decided to use a collective name to make it easier to credit the appropriate staff.
