Visual Novels

Fate/stay night

The first visual novel in the Fate franchise, Fate/stay night was released by Type-Moon for Windows PC in 2004. A CERO C-rated version of the game titled Fate/stay night Réalta Nua which contained no sex scenes was releaesed on the PlayStation 2 in 2007. This updated version of the game included voice acting and the true ending to the Fate route for the first time. Réalta Nua was later ported to the PlayStation Vita in 2012 and included new animations by Ufotable.

The story of Fate/stay night follows high schooler Shirou Emiya who inadvertently gets pulled into the Fourth Holy Grail War, a war among powerful mages called Masters who summon Heroic Spirits from throughout the ages to fight on their behalf as Servants all vying to be the last pair standing and claim the Holy Grail, which is said to grant any wish. The game’s story branches into three routes: Fate, Unlimited Blade Works, and Heaven’s Feel, each of which has received its own anime adaptation.

Fate/hollow ataraxia

The sequel to Fate/stay night, Fate/hollow ataraxia was released by Type-Moon on Windows PC in 2005. In 2014, an updated version of the game that includes voice acting was released in Japan on the PlayStation Vita. This version, like Réalta Nua is also censored.

Fate/hollow ataraxia takes place six months after the events of Fate/stay night and follows Bazett Fraga McRemitz and Shirou Emiya who find themselves in a four-day time loop. Bazett is a Master in the Fifth Holy Grail War and awakens on the fourth day of the war with no memory and with a new Servant, Avenger. Meanwhile, Shirou’s life returns to normal until an experiment of Rin’s changes time and space. Now Bazett, Avenger, and Shirou must work together and fight to discover the cause behind the time loop.

Fate/tiger colosseum

Fate/tiger colosseum is a 3D fighting game released on the PlayStation Portable in Japan in 2007. The game was produced by Capcom and Cavia in cooperation with Type-Moon. It features characters from the world of Fate/stay night all in a chibi art style. The game received a sequel in 2008 titled Fate/tiger colosseum Upper.

The character roster of Fate/tiger colosseum includes all characters from Fate/stay night as well as Bazett Fraga McRemitz and Caren Ortensia from Fate/hollow ataraxia along with a bonus character, Saber Lion, a version of Saber tressed in a lion costume. Even more characters are added to the roster in Fate/tiger colosseum Upper including Kiritsugu Emiya, Irisviel von Einzbern, Neco-Arc, and more.

Fate/unlimited codes

Fate/unlimited codes is a 3D fighting game released in Japan by Capcom in 2008 for arcades and for PlayStation 2. An enhanced edition of the game was later released on PlayStation Portable in 2009. This version of the game would go on to be released internationally.

The character roster for the original release included Saber, Shirou Emiya, Archer, Rin Tohsaka, Lancer, Rider, Berserker, Assassin, Gilgamesh, Caster, Kirei Kotomine, Sakura Matou, Luviagelita Edelfelt. The PS2 and PSP versions of the game received exclusive characters including Bazett Fraga Mcremitz, Saber Lily, Leysritt, and Zero Lancer.

Fate/Extra

Fate/Extra is a dungeon-crawler RPG released on the PlayStation Portable in Japan in 2010. The game was developed by Type-Moon and Image Epoch and published by Marvelous Entertainment. Its story follows Hakuno Kishinami who wakes up in a virtual world with no memories and must fight alongside his Servant, Saber, in order to win the Holy Grail and have their wish granted. The game features characters from Fate/stay night as well as other Type-Moon works, and features several new characters as well. The game uses a turn-based battle system in which the player issues commands to their Servant in battle. A companion game to Fate/Extra, Fate/Extra CCC, was released in 2013. While not a direct sequel, the game follows an alternate route of the Extra storyline.

Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star

Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star is an action game released in Japan on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in 2016. In 2017, the game was released on Nintendo Switch and Windows PC in both Japan and North America.

Its story follows up the events of Fate/Extra and centers on the conflict of two rival factions led by Nero Claudius and Tamamo no Mae who both vie for control of the Moon Cell and the Holy Grail. However, a third faction led by Altera threatens to destroy civilization. The game features a combination of visual novel and musou-style mechanics and features 16 playable Servants.

Mobile Game

Fate/Grand Order

Fate/Grand Order is a free-to-play mobile game published by Aniplex and developed for iOS and Android. The game is an MMORPG with turn-based combat in which players command Servants in battles through drawing and playing cards. Players can acquire new Servants by spending the game’s currency, Sant Quartz, which can be obtained through playing the game or purchasing it using real money. Servants are given through a random “gacha”-style mechanic. Players can also earn special rewards for participating in in-game events.

The game’s story follows Chaldea Security Organization member Ritsuka Fujimaru who must use Rayshift technology to travel back in time with their Servant, Mash Kyrielight, to retrieve seven Holy Grails from throughout history and save humanity from an extinction event.

Fate/Grand Order is massively popular worldwide, with revenues topping $4 billion in 2019, and it has been adapted into various other media including TV anime, films, and manga.
