Synopsis

Magical girls continue to fight in secret against witches in exchange for having their wishes granted. However, Iroha Tamaki has forgotten what it was that she wished for when she became a magical girl. Having lost something important, she continues to fight every day without knowing the reason why. Then, a rumor begins to circulate among the magical girls that leads Iroha to Kamihama City. There, her search to find the wish that she lost begins.

Background

Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story began as a RPG smartphone game developed by f4samurai for Android and iOS. It was released by Aniplex in Japan in August 2017 and in North America in June 2019. A Windows version of the game was also released in Japan by DDM Games in April 2019.

A manga adaptation written by Fujino Fuji began serialization in Houbunsha’s Manga Time Kirara Forward magazine in August 2018. As of June 2021, four collected tankobon volumes have been published. A spin-off manga written by U35 titled Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story – Another Story began serialization in Comic Fuz magazine in May 2019 and has been published in two tankobon volumes under the Manga Time KR Comics imprint as of June 2021.

The first season of the anime adaptation was announced in September 2018 and was animated by SHAFT. It was originally scheduled to premiere in 2019 but was delayed until 2020. It aired from January to March 2020 and spanned 13 episodes.

The second season of the anime adaptation was announced after the final episode of the first season. It is once again being animated by SHAFT and features Gekidan Inu Curry as chief director and series composer with Yukihiro Miyamoto credited as assistant director, Junichiro Taniguchi handling character designs, and Takumi Ozawa composing the music. The anime’s opening theme song is "Careless” by ClariS, and the ending theme song is "Lapis" by TrySail. The anime aired from August to September 2021 and spanned eight episodes.

The third and final season of the anime adaptation is once again being animated by SHAFT and features Yukihiro Miyamoto taking over as director, with Gekidan Inu Curry credited as chief director and series composer, Katsuhiko Takayama who is composing the series along with Gekidan, Junichiro Taniguchi who is once again handling character designs, and Takumi Ozawa who is returning to compose the music. The anime’s ending theme song is “Orgel," and it marks the first collaboration between groups ClariS and TrySail. All four of the anime’s episodes will premiere in Japan on April 3, 2022 on Tokyo MX, Tochigi TV, Gunma TV, BS11, MBS, and AT-X.

Characters

Iroha Tamaki (Voiced by: Momo Asakura)
A Light-type magical girl living in Takarazaki City. She has a strong personality, but she also tends to be overly cautious of her surroundings, which makes her a bit of an outsider in her class. She has forgotten the wish she made when she became a magical girl, and a rumor leads her to Kamihama City.

Yachiyo Nanami (Voiced by: Sora Amamiya)
An Aqua-type veteran magical girl and university student from Kamihama City. She doesn’t belong to a team and works alone. She is strongly territorial and is strict with magical girls from other areas who don’t feel the same. She keeps track of rumors that spread through the city.

Small Kyubey (Voiced by: Emiri Kato)
A small version of Kyubey that exists only in Kamihama City. Unlike Kyubey, he cannot speak.

Kuroe (Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa)
A magical girl who lives in Takarazaki City. She and Iroha sometimes fight against witches together, but they usually only exchange information with each other. She is afraid of fighting for her life, and wants to be saved from being a magical girl. A rumor has led her to become fixated on Kamihama City.

Momoko Togame (Voiced by: Mikako Komatsu)
A Flame-type magical girl who works as part of a team in Kamihama City. She has an older sister vibe and acts as a mediator between teammates Rena and Kaede, who often get into fights. She saves Iroha during a tough battle against a witch and helps in her search for her sister.

Kaede Akino (Voiced by: Ayaka Ohashi)
A Forest-type magical girl who works as a team together with Momoko and Rena. She is timid, but friendly and kind, and agrees to help Iroha. After a falling out with Rena, she is taken away by the Beast of Chains.

Rena Minami (Voiced by: Kaori Ishihara)
An Aqua-type magical girl who works as a team together with Momoko and Kaede. She has a clumsy personality that prevents her from expressing her thoughts honestly, and she often fights with Kaede. She is especially hostile toward Iroha when they first meet.

Felicia Mitsuki (Voiced by: Ayane Sakura)
A Dark-type magical girl who works as a mercenary for hire. She's good at what she does, but when she sees a witch, she loses her mind and attacks, often causing trouble. She is usually a goofy, selfish, and spoiled child.

Tsuruno Yui (Voiced by: Shiina Natsukawa)
A Flame-type magical girl who is a troublesome hothead.

Sana Futaba (Voiced by: Yui Ogura)
A Forest-type magical girl who is meek and insecure.
