Synopsis

Hakufu Sonsaku is a high school girl and the leader of Nanyo Academy who possesses a Magatama, which allows her to channel the spirit of the warrior Sun Ce from China's Three Kingdoms era. A skilled fighter, she goes up against other girls who also possess their own Magatama as the fight for supremacy in the Kanto region heats up!

Background

Ikki Tousen (also known as Battle Vixens) began as a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yuji Shiozaki that was serialized from April 2000 to August 2015 in the seinen manga magazine Comic Gum*. It has been published by Wani Books in 24 collected tankobon volumes and surpassed 4 million copies in print in March 2015. The manga was also licensed and released in English in North America and the UK by Tokyopop. A sequel manga titled Shin Ikki Tousen began serialization in Young King OURs magazine in November 2015 and has been released in four tankobon volumes as of March 2020.

Shin Ikki Tousen is the newest TV anime adaptation of the series and is being produced by Arms with Rion Kujo as director. Other staff includes Masaya Honda who is handling series composition and scripts, Rin-Sin and Tsutomu Miyazawa handling character designs, and Yasuharu Takanashi composing the music. The anime’s theme song is "Proud Stars” by Konomi Suzuki. The first episode of the anime will broadcast early on March 27, while the anime proper will premiere on May 17 and will span three episodes.

Characters

Yoshitoshi Asaemon Yamada (Voiced by: Atsumi Tanezaki)
Yoshitoshi is a second-year student and a special A Rank at Rokuhara High School. She is one of the Kansei fighters who, under orders from Himiko, attacked Nanyo Academy in Sonsaku’s absence. She is so ruthless that even her friends detest her, and she lives a solitary life. Though her enemy, she has a mutual affinity for Cho'un, whom she crossed swords with and parted vowing a rematch one day.

Indara (Voiced by: ?)
Indara is one of the 12 Divine Generals active in the Kansei region. She controls cards covered in poison and likes to drag opponents into an illusory space and slaughter them into tiny pieces. Under orders from Himiko, she attacks Sonken in order to take her into custody, but is seriously injured by a counterattack from the awakened Sonken.

Ganryu Sasaki (Voiced by: ?)
A genius swordswoman who meets Sonsaku while visiting Jofuku Academy. She values beautiful melodies and is merciless against opponents who play displeasing melodies. She once battled Takezo Shinmen and was utterly defeated by the immense gap in their abilities. She still has the sword she was given at that time and longs for the day when she can fight against Takezo on equal footing.

Hakufu Sonsaku (Voiced by: Masumi Asano)
The leader of Nanyo Academy. Her Magatama is stolen by Himiko and she loses the Water Dragon’s spirit and her confidence as a fighter. In order to save the life of her younger sister Chuubo Sonken, whom she only has faint memories of from her childhood, she travels to a legendary place between this world and the spirit world. She is the type to jump headlong into something without heeding others’ advice.

Chubo Sonken (Voiced by: Ayaka Ohashi)
She admires her older sister Hakufu and transfers to Nanyo Academy as a candidate for the next leader of the school. Though she tries to make a spectacular debut, she messes up on her first day. Though her potential is said to be greater than even an S-rank fighter, in reality it is still unknown.

Shimei Ryomo (Voiced by: Yuko Kaida)
One of Nanyo's Big Four, she is a master of locking techniques. She is a powerful B-rank fighter who holds a mysterious power tied to her left eye patch. She has a penchant for French maid outfits and is proficient in chi blasts. It is hinted that her past was painful and tragic.

Uncho Kan'u (Voiced by: Hitomi Nabatame)
A third-year student at Seito Academy who is a skilled warrior feared throughout the Kanto region. Her nickname is "God of Martial Arts." She wields the Blue Dragon Crescent Blade and the legendary sword Kusanagi.

Shiryu Cho'un (Voiced by: Yuu Asakawa)
A second-year student at Seito Academy and a special A-rank fighter. She wields one of the Hyakuhekito swords with extreme proficiency. She is kind-hearted and believes that violence isn’t always necessary to solve conflicts.

Komei Shokatsuryo (Voiced by: Mai Kadowaki)
A talented strategist belonging to Seito Academy Junior High. She is a quiet and mysterious girl who, despite her young age, is very adept at manipulating events and pulling the strings behind the scenes.

Himiko (Voiced by: Chiaki Takahashi)
The leader of Yamashiro Academy. For some unknown reason, she is trying to gather as many Magatama as possible. She is the mastermind behind the attack on Nanyo Academy during which she stole Hakufu’s Magatama.
