About Dante

Dante is the recurring protagonist of the Devil May Cry franchise. He also serves as the playable character in most of the series games. He is a paranormal mercenary and vigilante Devil Hunter.

About Dante: Background

Since the beginning of the franchise, Dante has been flippant, provocative, and mouthy. He enjoys taunting his opponents and showing off his abilities during battle. Both laidback and almost irresponsibly fearless, Dante often faces dangerous situations with little care or concern. As the series progresses, Dante slightly matures. He retains his carefree disposition but seems to treat dire situations more seriously. Like his father, Dante has a strong sense of justice. While he may act cynically, he prefers to do the right thing and values his family.

Dante was born along with his twin brother, Vergil, to the legendary demon, Sparda, and human woman, Eva. Dante and his brother grew up unaware that their father was a demon. After Sparda died, Eva raised the boys alone. She died in a demon attack where Dante believed Vergil died as well. Afterward, Dante followed his mother's wish to hide from the demons, adopting the new name Tony Redgrave.

About Dante: Abilities

Despite being a half-demon, Dante possesses significant demonic power. He has superhuman levels of strength, speed, endurance, and durability. Dante is skilled enough in hand-to-hand combat to outclass his sword-wielding nephew. Though he is incredibly skilled with a variety of weapons, Dante is most proficient in sword fighting. He also has an innate ability to master any firearm and is capable of dual-wielding Ebony and Ivory.

As a half-demon, Dante can access his demonic power through the use of the Devil Trigger technique. In the first game, Dante can only use the Devil Trigger to channel a specific demon's power. As the series progresses, the Devil Trigger mechanic becomes more developed. In Devil May Cry 2 and Devil May Cry 5, Dante can transform into Ultimate Devil Form and Sin Devil Trigger, respectively.

Other Important Devil May Cry Characters

Dante's immediate family make up most of the main cast and lore of the Devil May Cry franchise.

Vergil

Vergil is a main character and antagonist throughout the Devil May Cry franchise. He is Dante's estranged twin brother and Nero's father. After the death of their mother, Vergil rejected his humanity and embraced his demonic side. He is a secondary antagonist in the original Devil May Cry, the main antagonist in Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening, and the final antagonist in Devil May Cry 5.

Vergil is the opposite of his brother in many ways. He is reserved, stoic, and calculating. His main goal is to claim their father's power. He holds a lot of resentment toward Dante, believing that Dante hasn't truly lost anything the same way he has.

Nero

Nero is a main character in the Devil May Cry series and the son of Vergil. He is playable in both Devil May Cry 4 and Devil May Cry 5. Nero has some of his father's traits. He is serious, reserved, and anti-social. However, he is protective of his loved ones and short-tempered, leaving him prone to bouts of impulsiveness. Nero also shares some of his uncle's tendencies to talk back and show off.

Nero grew up on the island of Fortuna. He originally served as a Holy Knight in the Order of the Sword, a religious group worshipping Sparda. By the events of Devil May Cry 5, Nero has become a seasoned demon hunter.

Sparda

Sparda is Dante and Vergil's father and a legendary demon swordsman known as "The Legendary Dark Knight". He formerly served the demon Emperor Mundus as his most skilled knight. However, Sparda rebelled against Mundus in an effort to protect humanity. He defeated Mundus, sealing him away in a marble vault. Sparda, realizing his power was too great, sealed most of his abilities when sealing the gate to the netherworld. Centuries later, Sparda fell in love with a human woman in his own human disguise. He disappeared under unknown circumstances and died soon after the birth of his twin sons.
