Summary

The magical fantasy-romance Mahoujin Guru Guru ( Magical Circle Guru Guru ) was first serialized as a manga by Hiroyuki Eto in Enix’s Monthly Shonen Gangan and ran from 1992 until 2003 with 16 volumes released, and in addition to a film by Nippon Animation and video games, it was adapted into two different anime series that aired from 1994-95 and in 2000. This incredibly popular series is now being adapted into a new anime by Production I.G ( Psycho-Pass, Ghost in the Shell ).

The light-hearted series parodies role-playing video games, and in keeping with that theme, there are occasionally information boxes that appear. The series is set in a world where people choose typical RPG classes like Wizard, Priestess, and Warrior, and is centered around Nike, who seems to be a hero, and Kukuri, a magic apprentice.

Nike was trained by his father to be a hero in the hopes that eventually some evil would appear for him to fight, but although he’s skilled, he’s easily frightened and a bit immature. Likewise, Kukuri is competent in dark summoning magic and is lucky, but she’s also immature and is easily offended. She’s capable of using Guru Guru, a special magic used by drawing circles on the ground using her staff.

Together, these two aim to fight Lord Giri. Sealed hundreds of years prior during the reign of King Uruga III, he unleashes an army of monsters and is only weak to the Guru Guru magic used by Kukuri. Because of this, he constantly tries to destroy Kukuri.

The cast for this new adaptation includes Shizuka Ishigami ( Anthem of the Heart, Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? ) as Nike and Konomi Kohara ( Tsukigakirei, Yokoso Jitsuryoku Shigo Shugi no Kyoshitsu e ) as Kukuri, with an incredible supporting cast featuring Katsuyuki Konishi, Yukio Fujii, Yo Taichi, Takahiro Sakurai, Saori Onishi, Nobuhiko Okamoto, and Akira Ishida.

As for the staff, Hiroshi Ikehata ( Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Gurren Lagann ) was brought on as director and Hisaaki Okui ( Guilty Crown, Kill la Kill ) as series composer with character designs by Naoyuki Asano ( Osomatsu-san, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time ). Lantis is working on the music alongside TECHNOBOYS PULCRAFT GREEN-FUND who also worked with Bonjour Suzuki for the ending theme, and ORESAMA performed the opening “Trip Trip Trip.”
