About Aquaman/Arthur Curry

Arthur Curry, or Aquaman, is a half-human, half-Atlantean member of the Justice League portrayed by Jason Momoa in the film. Arthur rejects his Atlantean heritage and reluctantly agrees to seek the throne to protect the surface world. He has a variety of superpowers including superhuman strength, telepathy with marine life, and the ability to manipulate the tides. Momoa's portrayal marks Aquaman's cinematic debut. His characterization differs from Aquaman as seen in the comics. In the films, Arthur is gruffer and more arrogant, described on occasion as an outsider and outlaw. Critics view Momoa's performance as a refreshing take on the character, noting similarities between him and Chris Hemsworth's Thor.

Other Important Aquaman Characters

Arthur Curry's main relationships involve his romance with Mera and his conflict with the film's two main antagonists.

Mera

Mera is the princess of Xebel and Arthur's love interest played by Amber Heard. A trained warrior, Mera was raised by Arthur's mother, Queen Atlanna, in order to become queen. She possesses similar abilities as Aquaman, including superhuman strength, as well as hydrokinesis. Mera seeks Arthur's help to stop King Orm from declaring war on the surface world. Throughout their journey, Mera and Arthur fall in love. She stands at Arthur's side as he's crowned King of Atlantis in the film's ending scenes.

Orm Marius

King Orm is the main antagonist of Aquaman played by Patrick Wilson. He is the King of Atlantis and Arthur's half-brother. Orm aims to unite the seven underwater kingdoms and take revenge on those of the land for polluting the sea. In uniting the kingdoms, Orm would achieve the title Ocean Master, commander of the most powerful force on the planet. Orm ultimately fails to achieve his goals, losing to Arthur in a battle of Tridents for the throne. Before entering exile, Orm thanks Arthur for briefly reuniting him with their mother.

David Kane/Black Manta

Black Manta, or David Kane, is a major recurring villain in the Aquaman comics and a secondary antagonist in the 2018 film. Kane is a mercenary and son of the late Jesse Kane. He vows revenge on Arthur at the beginning of the film after his father dies in an attempt to kill him. Orm enlists Kane's help in eliminating Arthur and Mera. He receives experimental Atlantean technology and creates his power suit to take on Arthur. Kane survives his failed conflict with Arthur and strengthens his resolve to kill him in the future.
