OtapediaBrian Pushead Schroeder - BE@RBRICK

Pushead is an American musician and artist that is well-known throughout punk and heavy metal music communities. Although he has collaborated with many large bands and companies, Many different BE@BRICK figure designs have been produced by him as well. One such figure is the “BE@RBRICK Pushead 1000%”.

Pushead x BE@RBRICK Collaboration Background

The first two figures to be produced through the collaboration between Pushead and BE@RBRICK happened all the way back in June 2003. These figures were released as a part of Series 06 and were followed by many more figures in the following years. As of early 2021, well over a dozen different figures designed by Pushead have been created, with the most recent release being the golden Pushead version 5 in October 2020.

Collaboration Planning and Launch

Although there were two figures first released in June 2003, one of them was a rare secret figure that had a rarity of 1.04%. Several other BE@RBRICK figures designed by Pushead were also later released for special events and commemorations as well, like the “Nailspiker” figure created for San Diego Comic-Con 05, the “BWWT” figure created to commemorate the BE@RBRICK World Wide Tour, and the “HMV x Pushead” figure commemorating the 5th anniversary of HMV SHIBUYA. Several of the figures created through this collaboration also utilize a special coloring method that gives each individual figure a unique look.

BE@RBRICK Pushead 1000%

This particular BE@RBRICK first appeared as a secret addition to Series 28, but later got a massive re-release as a giant 1000% figure. Although it has all of the standard features of a classic BE@RBRICK figure -- a pair of round ears, a black button nose, and a large, rotund belly -- this figure is designed to look like it is made out of pink and orange marble. Since an unusual coloring method is used to make these figures, each one has a slightly different appearance. Aside from its design, however, this figure is surprisingly large, as it stands at over two feet tall. Despite its massive size, it also has articulated limbs that let its owner pose it in a variety of different ways.

About Pushead

Brian “Pushead” Schroeder is an American artist, record label owner, and musician that made his public debut as the main vocalist for a hardcore punk band from Idaho named Septic Death. Although the band was mainly active from 1981 to 1986, it continued to produce records until 2006. The album cover art was done by Pushead himself. Pushead would later go on to make album art and other works of art for many famous punk groups, metal bands, and other musicians like Metallica, The Misfits, and Travis Barker. Pusmort Records and Bacteria Sour, Pushead’s record labels, were founded in 1984 and 1993 respectively, and based in San Francisco, California. While these labels were used to produce records for Septic Death, several other bands had releases through the label as well.

About Pushead’s BE@RBRICK Designs

Most of the designs made through the collaboration between Pushead and BE@RBRICK each utilize a variety of different colors to create unusual, yet appealing patterns and textures. Some figures have a more mild, watercolor-style appearance while others have bolder, more striking designs. The “Nailspiker” BE@RBRICK figure resembles his album cover art, which often heavily uses skulls with a gruesome, weathered look. All in all, there is a rather impressive variety of designs created through this collaboration, meaning that there is something that everyone can enjoy.

Other Important Pushead Artwork

Although Pushead has helped create many different BE@RBRICK figures, he is mostly known for creating album art for popular bands like Metallica and Travis Barker. The following sections will showcase a few of these covers.

Metallica’s St. Anger

Although Pushead had previously created artwork for Metallica in the past, the 2003 album St. Anger was the first official album cover he created for the band. The work itself is painted a bold, vivid shade of red and depicts an arm bound in rope as it struggles to break free. The album was originally going to come in four separate colors but was simply reduced to the single red version.

Travis Barker’s Give the Drummer Some

This 2011 album is the first solo album by Travis Barker and features many other popular artists like Snoop Dogg, Ludacris, and Steve Aoki. The artwork features a weathered skull, a staple among Pushead’s works. The skull is wrapped in aged bandages and has a pair of drumsticks leaning against it. Teeth, hair, and leathery skin remained attached to the skull, giving it a gruesome appearance.
