There are a number of Final Fantasy flagship and spin off games on the Nintendo Switch. Below is a list of Final Fantasy games that have also been adapted and released on the Nintendo Switch, with a brief review and summary of each.

Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon Every Buddy!

This game is part of the Chocobo Mystery Dungeon series, a spin off franchise. Every Buddy! is a remaster of the game Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo’s Dungeon, released on the Nintendo Wii and later on the Switch as a dungeon adventure type RPG. It is similar to other Mystery Dungeon titles like Pokémon Mystery Dungeon for DS.

Final Fantasy Adventure (from Collection of Mana)

This game was released in Japan as Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden. It is a Zelda-esque spin off action adventure game first released on the Game Boy. It has Final Fantasy influences and gave way to Seiken Densetsu 2, released in the West as Secret of Mana. The game is nostalgic and if one is a fan of Zelda and Final Fantasy, it is definitely worth checking out.

Final Fantasy VII

Final Fantasy VII is the seventh title in the flagship series Final Fantasy, and RPG style game produced by Square and released in 1997, the first title to be released on the PlayStation. The game was produced by series veterans Hironobu Sakaguchi, composer Nobuo Uematsu and director Yoshinori Kitase. It was later released on various platforms including PlayStation 4, iOS, Android, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation Vita, and Nintendo Switch. The game was a great critical success and remains the best selling title of the franchise. Achieving numerous awards and praise, it inspired a Remake which is set to be released on 3/3/2020 on the Playstation 4. Often cited as one of the best video games of all time, it popularized Japanese RPG style games and drove sales of the Playstation. The game’s main protagonist is named Cloud Strife, a mercenary hired by an eco-terrorist group named AVALANCHE to stop an evil megacorporation from harvesting the world’s lifeblood as a source of energy and profit.

Final Fantasy VIII

Final Fantasy VIII is the eighth installment in the flagship Final Fantasy series, produced by Square for the playstation, it was first released in 1997. The game inspired a remaster that was released in 2019 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows and Nintendo Switch. The game centers on Squall Leonhart and his team of mercenaries who are pitted against antagonist Ultimecia, an evil sorceress from the future hoping to compress time.

Final Fantasy IX

Final Fantasy IX is an RPG style game and the ninth instalment in the flagship Final Fantasy series. The game was released by [Square] in 1999, the last game to be released on the original playstation. It was subsequently released on Playstation 3, Playstation Portable, Playstation Vista and Nintendo Switch. The game was released with critical success, often cited as one of the best games of the series. The game returned to the roots of the franchise, bringing back themes and gameplay aspects abandoned in Final Fantasy VII andFinal Fantasy VIII.

Final Fantasy X/X2

Final Fantasy X/X2 is the tenth installment in Square’s flagship series Final Fantasy. It is an RPG style game first released on the Playstation 2 in 2003 and remastered and re-released as Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in 2013, for PlayStation 4 in 2015, Microsoft Windows in 2016, and for Nintendo Switch and Xbox One in 2019. The game introduces a new Conditional Turn Based combat system and also a new experience system called “Sphere Grid”. It was released to critical success and featured groundbreaking changes never before seen in the series.

Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition

Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition is an RPG video game developed by Square Enix. It is an abridged version of Final Fantasy XV and was released on the PlayStation 4, iOS, Android, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in 2018. The game received generally positive reviews and many players were happy to play a shortened version of the game, especially those who didn’t have the time or patience to finish the first version. The Pocket edition is divided into ten major chapters, with the first being free and the rest available for individual purchase or discounted to purchase as a whole. Though it is abridged, it includes a shrunken down plot of the main game and only includes the major story points and big events.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles is an action role playing game published by Nintendo on the Gamecube and developed by The Game Designers Studio, a subsidiary of Square Enix. The game was first released in Japan in 2003 and in Europe, North America, and Australia in 2004, and it marked the first Final Fantasy game released on a Nintendo console since Final Fantasy VI in 1994. A remake of the game is planned to debut on iOS, Android, Playstation 4 and Nintendo Switch in the year 2020. The game follows a caravan of adventurers that travel around and collect mystical energy to power crystals that protect the world’s settlements from Miasma, a poisonous gas that is engulfing the world. The game received mixed to positive reviews, and a rating of 80/100 on Metacritic.
