Synopsis

Denji is a young man who makes a living as a Devil Hunter together with a Chainsaw Devil named Pochita. He lives in poverty while paying off debt left by his parents but is betrayed and killed. As his consciousness fades, he makes a contract with Pochita, gains a devil’s heart, and is resurrected as the Chainsaw Man!

Background

Chainsaw Man began as a manga series written and illustrated by Tatsuki Fujimoto. The first part of the series was serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from December 2018–2020, and the second part began serialization on the Shonen Jump+ online magazine in July 2022. Eleven collected tankobon volumes have been published under the Jump Comics imprint, with the 12th volume set to be published in October 2022. The manga is also available in English through Viz Media, who published the 11th volume in June 2022. In 2021, the manga won the 66th Shogakukan Manga Award in the shonen category and the Harvey Award in the Best Manga category. As of August 2022, the series surpassed 15 million copies in print.

A TV anime adaptation was announced in December 2020 during the Jump Festa '21 event. It is being produced by MAPPA (Attack on Titan: The Final Season, Jujutsu Kaisen, Zombie Land Saga Revenge) and features Ryu Nakayama (*Fate/Grand Order -Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia- *, Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale, Wake Up, Girls!) as director, with Hiroshi Seko (Ajin: Demi-Human, Banana Fish, Mob Psycho 100 III) handling series composition, Kazutaka Sugiyama (Darling in the Franxx, The IDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls, Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation) as character designer and chief animation director, Tatsuya Yoshihara (Black Clover, BlazBlue Alter Memory, Monster Musume: Everyday Life with Monster Girls) as action director, Makoto Nakazono (A3! Season Spring & Summer, Jujutsu Kaisen, SSSS.Gridman) as chief episode director, Kiyotaka Oshiyama (FLCL Progressive, Space Dandy) as devil designer, and Kensuke Ushio (Boogiepop and Others, Devilman Crybaby, A Silent Voice) as music composer. The anime’s opening theme song is “KICK BACK” by Kenshi Yonezu, and it will have a different ending theme song for each episode. The anime will have its world premiere with a screening at TOHO Cinemas Roppongi Hills on Sep. 19, 2022 and will premiere in the US at New York Comic Con on Oct. 7. Broadcasts will begin in Japan on TV Tokyo stations on Oct. 11. Crunchyroll will stream the series overseas.

Denji (Voiced by: Kikunosuke Toya)
Denji is a Devil Hunter who works together with a Chainsaw Devil named Pochita. He begins working as a Devil Hunter in order to pay off the debt left by his parents. However, he is betrayed and killed. But then, he makes a contract with Pochita, gains a devil’s heart, and becomes the Chainsaw Man.

Makima (Voiced by: Tomori Kusunoki)
Makima is a Devil Hunter with Public Safety Counter-Devil Special Division 4 who is under the direct supervision of the chief cabinet secretary.

Aki Hayakawa (Voiced by: Shogo Sakata)
Aki is a member of Public Safety Counter-Devil Special Division 4 and is Denji’s senpai as a Devil Hunter.

Power (Voiced by: Fairouz Ai)
Power is a Blood Fiend and member of Public Safety Counter-Devil Special Division 4.

Himeno (Voiced by: Mariya Ise)
Himeno is a member of Public Safety Counter-Devil Special Division 4 and is Aki’s buddy.

Kobeni Higashiyama (Voiced by: Karin Takahashi)
Kobeni is a 20-year-old rookie member of Public Safety Counter-Devil Special Division 4 who works with Denji.

Hirokazu Arai (Voiced by: Taku Yashiro)
Hirokazu is a 22-year-old rookie member of Public Safety Counter-Devil Special Division 4 who works with Denji.

Kishibe (Voiced by: Kenjiro Tsuda)
Kishibe is the head of Public Safety Counter-Devil Special Division 4.
