Synopsis

Rikka, Chiyo, Sekine, and Tsubasa…four friends who attend the same girls’ school. Though they may look like normal second-year junior high school students, they all actually have a secret they can’t tell anyone… Aliens x ninja x esper x crossdressing?! A new type of chaotic school comedy begins!

Background

Four People Lie in Their Own Way started as a manga series written and illustrated by Madoka Kashihara that began serialization in Kodansha's Bessatsu Shonen Magazine in April 2020. Two collected tankobon volumes have been published as of April 2022.

A TV anime adaptation was announced in March 2022. It is being produced by Studio Flad (Banished From The Heroes' Party, Rail Wars!, Yo-kai Watch: Forever Friends) with assistance from Pierrot (Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Hunter × Hunter, Osomatsu-san) and features Makoto Hoshino (King’s Raid: Successors of the Will, Motto To Love Ru, Uta no Prince-sama - Maji Love 1000%) as director, with Megumi Shimizu (Butlers x Battlers, My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!, Snow White with the Red Hair) handling series composition, Ruriko Watanabe (DamePri Anime Caravan, KutsuDaru, Mirai Nikki) handling character designs, and Tomoki Kikuya (Bocchi the Rock!, Harem in the Labyrinth of Another World, Nisekoi - False Love) composing the music. The anime’s opening theme song is "Eclipse" by NACHERRY, and the ending theme song is “For 4 Forever” by Chiemi Tanaka, Natsumi Murakami, Ayane Sakura, Megumi Han, and Tomoko Kaneda as their respective characters. The anime will premiere in Japan on Oct. 15, 2022 during the "ANiMAZiNG!!!" programming block on ABC TV, TV Asahi, and other channels.

Characters

Rikka (Voiced by: Chiemi Tanaka)
Rikka is a mood maker who exudes innocence and chibi cuteness. In truth, though, she is actually an alien named Papipoporo Duerrika who is an ace pilot and captain in the Galactic Revolutionary Army that fights against the Galactic Empire. She is currently on Earth, where she crash-landed, and she uses a device disguised as a plushie to control the memories of those around her as she awaits rescue. She is desperate to blend into Earth’s culture.

Chiyo (Voiced by: Natsumi Murakami)
Chiyo is a refined, slightly naive, picture-perfect rich girl. Or rather, that’s the aura she exudes to those around her, but she’s actually a runaway ninja. She is a fierce fighter with a gentle demeanor that’s hard to imagine, and she relentlessly fights off those who pursue her daily. Although she appears to be living a bloody life, she has no regrets about leaving her ninja village and seems to be fully enjoying a happy life. For some reason, she is strict with men.

Sekine (Voiced by: Ayane Sakura)
Sekine is a class representative with excellent grades. For some reason, she is the only one called by her last name and the only one who knows the truth about Rikka and Chiyo due to being an esper who can read the thoughts of others. However, her powers are limited to those of the same sex, and she cannot read Tsubasa’s thoughts. Though she appears indifferent, she may have astonishing potential hidden behind her thick glasses.

Tsubasa/Tsuyoshi (Voiced by: Megumi Han)
Tsubasa is a crossdressing boy who goes to an all-girls’ school. Though he is supposed to attend a boys’ school, when his twin sister finds out that her favorite male idol attends school there, she forces him to switch places with her. In a sense, it could be said that he embodies the adolescent boys’ dream, but his situation surrounded by three overly peculiar girls doesn’t allow it. His real name is Tsuyoshi.

Tsubasa (Voiced by: Yu Serizawa)
Tsubasa is Tsuyoshi’s older twin sister. She is the real Tsubasa who originally attended an all-girls’ school. When she finds out that her favorite male idol enrolls at the school Tsuyoshi was supposed to be attending, she switches places with him and begins attending the boys’ school in his place.

Hanzо (Voiced by: Yuya Hirose)
Hanzo is Chiyo’s younger brother. He has been after his sister, who snuck out of the village and became a runaway ninja, but she is always one step ahead of him. He spends his days training deep in the mountains from sunup to sundown, but he wonders if he will ever catch up to his sister.

Brian-sensei (Voiced by: Yoji Ueda)
Brian-sensei is an English teacher at Kashihara Girls’ School. Perhaps thanks to his laid-back personality, he is able to open himself up to Rikka and the others. His teaching style is to praise and stretch his students, but this may sometimes lead them astray.

Masukuma (Voiced by: Tomoko Kaneda)
Masukuma is a mascot character. He is so popular, lines form whenever a limited edition product is sold. Many students at school also carry around Masukuma products, and Chiyo in particular is a big fan. In fact, he ends up changing her fate.

Narrator (Voiced by: Houchu Ohtsuka)

Music

Opening Theme Song: "Eclipse" by NACHERRY
Ending Theme Song: “For 4 Forever” by Chiemi Tanaka, Natsumi Murakami, Ayane Sakura, Megumi Han, and Tomoko Kaneda
