Attack on Titan Anime Season 3 Summary

In the previous Season 2, Historia revealed to Ymir that “Krista Lenz” was a fake name. In Season 3 she also confesses that this name was created to protect her from the Military Police member who murdered her mother and sent Historia and her father, Rod Reiss, into exile.

Rod, who belongs by blood to the true monarchy, became the puppet to the current humanity’s king, Fritz. He kidnaps Historia and Eren and takes them to a hidden place. He explains that the Titan’s power has been passed through the Reiss family bloodline since Rod’s younger brother, Uri, did it to become the First King. Then, Uri decided to erase the existence of Titans from humanity’s collective memory for “a good cause”.

In the end, after trying to convince Historia to inherit Eren’s Titan’s power by eating him, she refuses to do it and Rod ends up consuming the liquid full of Founding Titan serum. In turn, he transforms him into a half-formed, humongous Titan.

In addition, Eren finds out that he inherited the Titan’s power after eating his father. Grisha had eaten Queen Frieda and destroyed most of the Reiss family in order to get the Founding Titan power. When the walls broke down, he had forced Eren to eat him to pass on this power to his son.

Another character’s past that is revealed during this season is the one of Levi Ackerman. There is a new character that is introduced with the name of Kenny “The Ripper”. With his dying breath, Kenny, who had been the childhood mentor for Levi, explained that he was his uncle and that both Levi and Mikasa were relatives of him. This is the reason why both characters share the same surname.

Later on, Erwin and Levi plan to take out the Beast Titan. However, such a plan does not succeed and ends with many soldiers seriously injured. With Erwin and Armin almost dying and one Titan serum, the characters have to make a choice of just one of them to get the injection that would allow them to eat Bertholdt and become the inheritor of the Armored Titan. Also, in this way, they could save one of their lives. After some divagations, Armin is the chosen one to eat Bertholdt and he emerges healed from his Titan form, while Erwin dies.

After these events, Hange, Levi, Eren and Mikasa arrive at Shinganshina to investigate the basement of Eren’s home. Eren unlocks the door with the key hanging on his neck and the group opens a desk drawer with a hidden compartment containing three books. Inside the book, they find a strange picture of Grisha, standing next to a woman holding a child who is not Eren.

Six years after the fall of Wall Maria, the Survey Corps begin the expedition outside the wall. But although Eren had always wanted to see the sea, he realizes that they only found enemies across the sea, instead of the freedom he was looking for.
