OtapediaWar Hammer Titan - Attack on Titan

The War Hammer Titan is one of the Nine Titans of the universe of Attack on Titan. Some of its most remarkable characteristics include its ability to create structures out of hardened Titan flesh. In Chapter 95, it is explained that, until the year 854, the Tybur family kept the War Hammer Titan power for several generations, but currently it is Eren Jaeger who possesses it. In the manga, it appears for the first time in Chapter 101. In the anime series, it is likely to make an appearance in Season 4, the last Season of the series.

Within the series, it is explained that ancient artworks represented the War Hammer Titan as a man carrying a hammer. When it finally showed up in the manga, it actually has an enormous warhammer that is strong enough to destroy completely any type of hardened Titan skin.

Abilities

The War Hammer Titan can produce and manipulate objects that are created with hardened Titan flesh. It can make several kinds of structures, from weapons that are big enough to confront a Titan, to flood areas and its signature war hammer. In addition to hard objects, it can also create flexible weapons, like the string of a crossbow. This ability is also apparent with the inheritor of the Female Titan, and was used in Chapter 102 to enclose the War Hammer Titan’s inheritor in a crystal.

However, this hardened crystal form can be damaged when a stronger weapon, strikes or crushes it, like the Jaw Titan’s claws and teeth did in Chapter 104. Theo Magath, the general of the Marleyan military, stated in Chapter 117 that these structural hardening abilities should be used in moderation. Otherwise, if the War Hammer Titan overuses these abilities a lot in a short period of time, the inheritor can quickly deplete her or his resistance.

Unlike any other Titan, the War Hammer Titan can also remove its control center from its nape. In this case, the body of the Titan is connected to its inheritor by a long cable of flesh, as it can be shown in Chapter 102. Nevertheless, if someone cuts that cable, the War Hammer Titan will stay inactive, although it can make a new body. Also, a unique skill of the War Hammer Titan is that, as the inheritor does not need to be inside of its nape, the Titan body can emerge from various locations after its transformation.

Origins

The War Hammer Titan, as well as all the Nine Titans, appeared after the death of Ymir Fritz. 1,700 years after her death, one or several of the quarreled Eldian houses that were subservient to the [Founding Titan] were the ones that possessed the War Hammer Titan. After seventeen centuries, Karl Fritz, King of the Fritz family, decided to abandon the confrontations of Eldia and moved to Paradis Island. As it can be seen in chapter 86, after relocating to Paradis Island, the Tybur family took the War Hammer Titan and were the first Eldians to help the people of Marley during the Great Titan War. The War Hammer Titan was the last Titan that its original noble family of Eldians ever held.

After the end of this war, the War Hammer Titan remained in the possession of the Tybur family, who swore to defend Marley as honorary Marleyan aristocrats. But, as it is explained in Chapter 95, the War Hammer Titan was not used in battle throughout the next century. The War Hammer Titan power has been passed from generation to generation among the members of this family, and for security reasons, the identity of its inheritor was kept as a secret from the population, except a few high-standing individuals in Marley. After his speech to the worldwide leaders in Chapter 99, it was believed that the current inheritor of this Titan was Willy Tybur.

However, after the chaos caused by Eren Jaeger (transformed into a Titan) in Liberio when he murdered and devoured Willy Tybur, the latter’s sister decided to face him also using her powers to fight, revealing herself to be the true inheritor of the War Hammer Titan.

Then, Mikasa confronted the War Hammer Titan directly, without Willy Tybur’s sister noticing that it was a distraction maneuver so that Eren could find out her true weak point. Thus, once verified that the real body of the Titan was hidden underground, Eren dug up the crystallized body of the War Hammer Titan bearer, cutting the cord that linked the crystal with the body of the Titan. After doing it, the War Hammer Titan stopped moving. When Eren was about to eat the Tybur sister’s body, Porco Galliard and Pieck joined the battle. Taking advantage of the distraction, the War Hammer inheritor generated a new body that caught the Eren’s Attack Titan. At that time, the Beast Titan also arrived to join the battle against the Survey Corps.

While the battle keeps going, Eren tries to break the glass that protects Tybur, and after several useless attempts, he discovers that only the Jaw Titan can break the material. So when he immobilizes Galliard, Eren takes the Titan from the hair while he rips his arms, then introduces Miss Tybur’s crystallized body into the jaws of the Titan and, using them as a nutcracker, breaks the glass and crushes the woman inside, drinking the blood that flows from her squeezed body in order to obtain the War Hammer Titan power.
