OtapediaLuffy Gear 4 One Piece - Figures

The One Piece franchise began as a manga created by Eiichiro Oda that was first serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1997 and has since grown to be an international hit with fans all around the globe. With the success of the manga came an anime adaptation that was produced by Toei, which debuted two years after the manga and is still running over twenty years later. As one would expect from a franchise as popular as One Piece, it is of no surprise that there is a countless amount of merchandise for fans to choose from to add to their personal collections. One such form of merchandise is the collectible figure, which recreates fan-favorite characters from their respective series.

Of course, Luffy is undoubtedly one of the most popular characters of One Piece and, as such, has a plethora of different figures that fans can purchase. Many figures depict the lovable protagonist in various poses, outfits, and forms, with one of the most distinct being his Gear 4 form, which made its first appearance in the Dressrosa Arc. A few of the most popular figures of Luffy’s Gear 4 form include the “One Piece King of Artist: Monkey D. Luffy Gear 4 Special”, the “Portrait of Pirates One Piece Luffy Gear Fourth”, and the “Figuarts Zero One Piece Monkey D. Luffy Gear 4 - Snakeman King Cobra-”.

One Piece King of Artist: Monkey D. Luffy Gear 4 Special Figure

This pair of figures from Banpresto features the two distinct forms that Luffy can take when using Gear 4: Bounceman (also known as Boundman) and Snakeman. The Bounceman form gives Luffy a much bulkier upper body while keeping his legs almost unchanged, giving this rendition of Luffy some rather strange body proportions. The second form of Gear 4, Snakeman, looks much more like base Luffy, though he is still much more muscular than normal. Both figures capture several iconic aspects of Gear 4’s design as well, like the deep red Armament Haki covering Luffy’s arms and legs, as well as the steam that swirls around his body.

About Gear 4 Luffy

Gear 4 is one of Luffy’s unique techniques that he developed using the properties of his rubber body to overcome incredibly strong opponents. The following is a brief overview of the form and its uses.

Background

Luffy first developed Gear 4 during his training with Silvers Rayleigh on Rusukaina. While Gear 3 requires Luffy to blow air into his bones to use, Gear 4 has him blowing air into his muscular structure, often causing his entire upper body to greatly expand. Although this form gives Luffy unbelievable amounts of speed and power, it is often seen as a last resort, as the form itself has a strict time limit and is extremely strenuous on Luffy’s body.

Special Abilities

Gear 4 allows Luffy to transform into three different forms, though only two have been shown extensively. These two forms are Bounceman and Snakeman and each respective form has their own strengths and weaknesses. Bounceman is incredibly bulky and is more based on power. Since this form makes his body much more elastic than normal, Luffy’s body will bounce off of nearly anything - including most physical attacks and the ground he stands on. Snakeman, however, is based more on speed and agility. This dexterity causes his “Python” attack to accelerate the longer it stretches until it eventually reaches its mark.

Other Important One Piece Characters

Two important characters that went against Luffy’s Gear 4 include Doflamingo and Charlotte Katakuri.

Donquixote Doflamingo

Doflamingo is an incredibly influential character that was once a Warlord and a powerful broker in the black market that went by the nickname Joker. As a child, Doflamingo lived the life of luxury as a Celestial Dragon until his father renounced their family’s power, leaving them no more than common citizens. Angered by his father’s decision, Doflamingo eventually committed patricide and formed the Donquixote Pirates.

Charlotte Katakuri

Charlotte Katakuri is one of the strongest children of Charlotte Linlin, also known as Big Mom. Although he is known for always being reliable to his siblings, he has a soft, lazy side that he tries to hide from everyone. That said, he is immensely powerful and poses an incredible threat to Luffy with his mastery of Observation Haki and his Mochi-Mochi Fruit, which mirrors Luffy’s Gum-Gum Fruit in many ways.
