About Sailor Mars
Sailor Mars is the modern-day reincarnation of the Guardian of Love and Passion who served Princess Serenity. As a civilian, she goes by Rei Hino, a middle school and high school student as well as a part-time shrine priestess.
Background
Sailor Mars has two distinct personalities between the anime and the manga. In the manga, Rei Hino is reserved, demure, and heavily involved in her priestess studies. Her anime depiction gives her a more fiery personality fitting with Mars as the Roman god of war. In both iterations she is determined and stubborn, causing her to clash at times with Usagi's emotional outbursts. The biggest difference between her manga and anime portrayal involves her relationship with Mamoru Chiba. In the anime, Rei develops a crush on Mamoru and tries to date him before his true identity is revealed. However, in the manga, Rei expresses disdain for all men and shows no interest in Mamoru.
Abilities
Sailor Mars uses mostly fire-based attacks in line with the planet's zodiac element. Her role as a priestess informs her earlier attacks, such as her use of an ofuda to dispel evil spirits. Her innate abilities of precognition and purification help in combat, making her a rather versatile fighter. Sailor Mars's ultimate attack, Mars Flame Sniper, combines her Sailor Guardian fire attacks with archery.

Sailor Moon
As the central figure of the series, Sailor Moon influences the course of nearly every character's trajectory. As the civilian girl, Usagi Tsukino, she is a lazy crybaby who would rather daydream than put in real effort. This clashes with the determined and proactive Rei Hino, who often stoops to childish levels herself when fighting with Usagi. Although their constant bickering puts a strain on the other guardians, Rei and Usagi have a close bond that shows its strength in harrowing moments.
Tuxedo Mask
Tuxedo Mask spends the majority of the first arc as a mysterious figure of unknown allegiance aiding Sailor Moon in her fights. The boy-crazy Usagi Tsukino develops a crush on the chivalrous stranger and Rei expresses a playful interest in him as well. At the same time, Rei pursues a relationship with Mamoru Chiba. She bonds with Mamoru over their mutual teasing of Usagi. However, he doesn't reciprocate her romantic interest. After Mamoru and Tuxedo Mask are revealed to be not only the same person but also the reincarnation of the Moon Princess's lover, Rei gives up on Mamoru and nurses her broken heart.
