Synopsis

The calm and collected wheelchair-bound Yu, the ace basketball player Hal, and Hal’s girlfriend Kotona - three childhood friends going to high school together. One day, Kotona is assaulted by someone and Yu and Hal come to her aid, but soon they find themselves transported to the parallel world Ni no Kuni. In this magical world there live other versions of themselves whose fate they are tied to. Gradually Yu becomes attracted to the princess of Ni no Kuni, Aasha, who looks just like Kotona. But the friends soon learn that in order to save Kotona’s life, they must take Aasha’s. With Hal wanting to save Kotona and Yu wanting to save Aasha, how will they decide who to save?

Background

Based on the popular video game series of the same name, the theatrical anime adaptation of Ni no Kuni is being directed by Yoshiyuki Momose at studio OLM with an original story and scripts by Akihiro Hino, character designs by Yasushi Saidani, and music by Joe Hisaishi. The movie’s theme song is "MOIL" by Keina Suda. The anime will be released in theaters in Japan on Aug. 23, 2019.
