Khoruimaki Karen is the Protagonist of the Gun Gale Online spin off series of Sword Art Online. Residing in Tokyo city, she attends an all female University. Due to her height dysphoria, she does not make any attempt to build new friendships in real life and is jealous of other girls who are rather short. Karen has dark long hair and blue eyes. She wears simple clothes that don't make much of an impression on the general public.

In her free time, she enjoys listening to music by Kanzaki Elsa[神崎エルザ].
Being from Hokkaido, other players online are able to identify her from the region as she commonly speaks in a Hokkaido dialect. Over the events of her playtime in Gun Gale Online, Karen overcomes her troubles with her height dysphoria, as well as cutting her hair to around neck length.

In Gun Gale Online, Karen can be identified as a short slim avatar, that one may describe as "Chibi." Dressed entirely in pink, she was given the given the nickname Pink Devil [ピンクの悪魔]. Her main firearm, a pink FN P90 nicknamed P-Chan, is classified as a Personal Defence Weapon, as it is appropriate for close-to-mid range combat.

History

Karen was raised on the island of Hokkaido, in the City of Obihiro, Karen was teased growing up for being a rather tall woman by Japanese standards. While still keeping a few close friends from her hometown, she moved to Tokyo to continue into University where she currently resides in solitude, in an apartment owned by her sister.

During the summer vacation of August 2025, during a visit her parents back in Hokkaido, Karen developed an interest of deep-dive VR games during a news broadcast regarding the Sword Art Online incident, and how society as seemed to forget about it due to advancements in deep-dive technology and evolution of The Seed. The opportunity to live a different life within the virtual reality was something that she showed interest in.

Shortly after this broadcast, Karen met with her childhood friend Shinohara Miyu [篠原 美優] to only find out that she herself was already a VR Gamer, and played actively on the VRMMORPG ALfheim Online. Karen decided to choose this game for her first VRMMORPG experience, choosing the nickname LLENN for her avatar. However, shortly after connecting, coming to her virtual senses and noticing the height of her virtual self, she was quickly ejected from the game as her heart-rate had sky-rocketed. Karen transferred her character across several different VRMMO titles, each generating a new randomly assigned character, before settling on her appearance within the VRMMO Gun Gale Online.

Relationships

  • Shinohara Miyu [篠原 美優] - Miyu is Karen's friend from Karen's hometown.
  • Pitohui - Karen's first friend in Gun Gale Online. She is a very skilled player who utilised a number of different weapons in GGO.
  • M - Karen's tactical partner in the first Squad Jam. He uses a Sniper Rifle as his main arm. His knowledge of cartography gives him a tactical advantage while giving orders to Karen.
  • Shintaiso Club Members (SHINC) - While heated rivals in the events of the first Squad Jam, Karen meets each member of SHINC outside of GGO, only to find they are all young secondary school students.

Equipment

  • Standard issue Laser rifle - Designed for killing monsters in the hunting fields
  • Standard issue Submachine Gun - Uses live ammunition, designed for killing players
  • Two Škorpion vz. 61 sub-machine guns - Purchased to gain the upperhand in taking out enemy players
  • FN P90 - Purchased from a speciality shop while meeting with Pitohui, Karen bought it for it's cute appearance
  • Knife - While her first knife was a loaner from M, she purchased her own after the Squad Jam due to it's practicality in eliminating enemies
