Nagata Shin'ichi, known as Recon in ALfheim Online, is a Sylph player, Kirigaya Suguha's classmate and friend who has introduced her to the game.

History

To look at Kazuto's hobby more closely, Suguha remembers Shinichi was good at virtual reality games and asks him to teach her how to play them. Knowing she has little free time, Shinichi offers ALfheim Online as a game that does not need much grinding, being primarily about the players' skills. He guides her in-game, as they play in a party. Shinichi ends up falling for Suguha.

Fairy Dance Arc

After a group of Salamanders ambushes the party, Recon starts suspecting Sigurd who uncharacteristically acted as a distraction. He says goodbye to Leafa at the Tower of Wind and uses his transparency spell Hollow Body to track Sigurd. His goal is at first to assassinate Sigurd for saying bad things to Leafa, but then he sees Sigurd use an invisibility cloak to hide from an ally and needs to know, so he follows Sigurd into the Swilvane sewers.

There, Recon witnesses Sigurd's secret talks with two Salamanders, where Sigurd tells them to put a Tracer on Leafa, and further talks about a large force of Salamanders that are to attack during the alliance talks between the Sylphs and Cait Siths. Recon figures that would make the Cait Siths unhappy with the Sylphs, and decides to do something about this. However, he missteps, is found out, and captured using paralysis so he would not tell anyone. Shinichi logs out and calls Suguha in real life instead. Thanks to his warning, Kirito manages to repel the force in a duel, and so the potential war is prevented.

After Recon's paralysis is over, he kills the Salamanders and breaks out of the cell and the sewers. He then spends a full night traveling to the city of Alne and finds Leafa at the World Tree gate. Recon hears Leafa wants to disband her and Kirito's party, and is happy enough to say he loves her, which grants him Leafa's gut punch for his trouble.

Later on, Leafa asks Recon to help her and Kirito on the Grand Quest. The plan is that Recon helps Leafa keep healing Kirito who goes inside the World Tree tower, keeping out of the monsters' aggro range, as monsters who have no ranged attacks are known to pay little attention to the healers.

However, the Grand Quest monsters start attacking Recon and Leafa, spawning the more heals are cast, and Recon starts pulling the aggro by switching to area-of-effect offensive spells while evading the attacks. They are overwhelmed by monsters, and Recon uses a Sacrifice spell that takes out much of the swarm, but he dies and receives a larger-than-normal death penalty. He wins enough time for the unexpected help of a joint Sylph-Cait Sith task force to arrive in time and let Kirito reach the tower top.

New Aincrad

The exalted Sylph Lady Sakuya offers Recon a position in the Lord manor staff in recognition of his achievements.

Mother's Rosario

Recon is shown episodically at the barbecue party in Kirito and Asuna's Forest Home, jealous of Leafa talking to a member of the Sleeping Knights. He also responds to Asuna's summons to see Konno Yuuki off.

Magic

Recon is a master of stealth magic, able to use certain Darkness spells in addition to Wind magic his race is attuned to.

• Hollow Body is a high-rank spell that grants the caster invisibility from monsters and players.
• Healing magic is a single target spell Recon uses.
• Vacuum blades magic is an cone effect spell projecting green boomerang-shaped wind blades that deal small damage to everyone in their way. Recon is using an enhanced version of this, using five wind gust-like blades instead.
• Self-destruct magic is a high-rank Darkness spell that allows the player to self-destruct in an explosion that deals very high damage to everyone in a large spherical area around them. The death penalty in this case is multiple times the normal death rate.
