OtapediaAccel World vs Sword Art Online: Millennium Twilight - Sword Art Online

Accel World vs. Sword Art Online: Millennium Twilight is an action role-playing game based on the Accel World and [Sword Art Onlkone light novel] series. It was released for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita on March 16, 2017 for Japan, and July 7, 2017 for other territories. The Windows PC version was released worldwide on September 12, 2017. It was developed by Japanese studio Artdink based in Tsukishima, Tokyo, and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. It is considered a cross-over game, a popular mechanic particularly for Japanese franchises, where two established universes collide for a particular story.

Plot

Accel World vs. Sword Art Online: Millenium Twilight begins with Asuna (Asuna Yuuki) and Kirito (Kazuto Kirigaya) from Sword Art Online who are having a picnic with [Yui]. As they search for a suitable stop, they are attacked by monsters which should technically be impossible due to the location being neutral on the map. Suddenly an urgent announcement calims that everyone is required to log out immediately otherwise they will recieve punishment. Yui tells Asuna and Kirito to log out, as she runs off towards a shrine. The characters ignore her pleas and chase after her, where they attacked by Accel World's Black Lotus. It is revealed that Black Lotus was hired by a powerful witch named Persona Vable who plans to seal Yui away with plans to start the apocalypse. Realizing her mistake, Black Lotus decides to join Kirito and Asuna in their quest to rescue Yui and save their world. Kirito and Asuna believe that because they ignored the urgent warning to log out, some of their friends surely did the same. They set out to recruit their remaining friends, while uncovering the mystery as to why their universes are colliding.

Gameplay

Accel World vs. Sword Art Online: Millennium Twilight utilizes a party-based system for combat, where the player can mix and match characters from both Sword Art Online and Accel World to form a group of three for battles. Players can switch between their three chosen characters at any time, allowing the player to form combos, chain attacks, and fight on both the ground and in the air. Using many of the same systems featured in [Sword Art Online: Lost Song], which was a point of contention for many reviewers.

Players are encouraged to complete side-quests in the game to gather much needed experience points and additional rewards. Players can upgrade their party by visiting the hub world, the Floating City of Ryne, to purchase items. As a general rule, Accel World characters are experts at melee combat, while Sword Art Online characters are the only flying characters in the game. As soon as the player touches an enemy they are taken to an open environment for the battle to take place.

Reception

Accel World vs. Sword Art Online: Millenium Twilight obtained a "mixed or average" score on video game review aggregation site Metacritic. RPGSite awarded the game an 8/10 citing " moments of confusion and the unintentional nerfing of most Brain Burst characters aside, this is a fun action RPG that is worth a look if you’re not a fan of these MMO anime series, and most likely worth a buy if you are." Dual Shockers were less enthusiastic with 6.5 stating "the similarities between this game and Sword Art Online: Lost Song are just too much to overlook. If you enjoyed the past Sword Art Online games then this is for you, but if you know nothing about either of these worlds and are just looking for a fun action RPG, I’d look elsewhere."
