Background

Quinella was born to a marriage of convenience between the two noble houses of the time, 350 years before Kirito's second arrival into Underworld. Her father was Centoria's lord who thus had the authority to bestow Sacred Tasks, or Callings. The lord had created a hitherto unheard-of Calling "Sacred Arts Research" for his daughter.

Chronology

History: Alicization Arc 1/2

Youth

Quinella was definitely a gifted child. She studied the meanings of the words used in the commands, and realized that was a valid language of its own (English). She kept piecing it together until she came up with her first offensive command, Thermal Arrow, and tested it on an animal. Her stats increased, and she realized that killing a living being increases her System Control Authority, so she kept sneaking out at nights and hunting animals just to improve her stats. As she did this, her Authority grew.

By the time she was thirteen, Quinella started faking miracles to people, claiming that it was the gods' doing, and that they needed worship for more miracles. So the Central Cathedral was built in the center of Centoria, and the Axiom Church worshiping started. The talented girl implemented the feudal system by making lords nobility, and established the vertical power system of governance throughout all of the Human Empire.

Quinella issued the world's first edition of a written code of laws, called the Taboo Index, and made sure everyone accepted its rules. Primary among those were the rules to remain loyal to the Axiom Church and to never do anything that decreases the Life of a living being, so no-one could reach her level of authority in that way and preserving her supremacy.

Immortality

The tower in the Cathedral was constantly being renovated and growing, until Quinella stopped going out and focused on her studies searching for the Sacred Arts that would let her change her maximum Life parameter. As she grew older, her Life naturally dwindled, making her frantic. On her deathbed, by some fluke or possibly outside help, Quinella managed to find the command that detailed the list of all the commands that were available with the system. On the very bottom of the list there was the command raised her System Control Authority on par with the Cardinal System, allowing her to do anything at all, including changing the terrain, spawning items, and, at long last, adjusting any object's durability stat, including her own Life.

Quinella reverted and locked her maximum Life to that of a young woman thus causing her to look young and beautiful again. But even so she was not satisfied, because Cardinal had the same rights as she did — and as far as Quinella was concerned, there could not be two supreme authorities in the world. She decided to correct this.

Quinella spent a lot of time getting familiar with the new knowledge of high-privilege commands, trying to make sense of the complicated syntax guides. Finally, Quinella devised a complex command to remove Cardinal and activated it, but she had made just one mistake and ended up having the Cardinal System flashed on top of her own mind.
