About Cardcaptor Sakura

Cardcaptor Sakura, also known as CCS, is a magical girl shoujo manga and anime series that was popular in the 90’s. The manga series was written and illustrated by the all-female manga writing and illustrating group known as CLAMP. The series follows the story of a 10-year old fourth grader Sakura Kinomoto, who discovers she was born with magical powers. She finds a mysterious book in her family’s basement and accidentally releases magical Clow Cards. Clow Cards are magical cards infused with both ancient Eastern and Western magics and relate to the concept of the natural elements. Sakura then takes on the responsibility of retrieving the missing cards by battling their magical personification and sealing them away.

Throughout the series, fans are introduced to a variety of characters including Tomoyo, Cerberus/Keberos, and Syaoran. Tomoyo Daidouji is Sakura’s best friend and often supplies her cute Cardcaptoring costumes and communication devices. Cerberus/Keberos is an ancient guardian of the Clow Cards and is tasked with choosing and training the master of the cards. Syaoran Li first appears as Sakura’s rival, but eventually grows fond of her and helps her capture the Clow Cards. Together, the characters venture out to find and capture the remaining Clow Cards.

The Cardcapter Sakura series has great reviews by critics for its creativity. In 2001, the manga received the Seiun Award for Best Manga. The television series also received great comments for having a wide target audience from young children to older viewers. In fact, the series received the Animage Grand Prix award for Best Anime in 1999.
