Evangelion Cosplay - Merchandise

Evangelion is a classic mecha anime series that has been enjoyed by many fans since its original television broadcast that began in October 1995. Although the TV series itself ended up doing quite well, the more recent Rebuild of Evangelion movie series and its 2019 Netflix release caused fans to fall in love with the franchise all over again. Due to the series’ success, a wide range of merchandise has been created throughout the years. While some fans from around the world enjoy the plethora of apparel, figures, and toys, other fans enjoy the art of cosplaying as their favorite characters from the series. More devout cosplayers may opt to create their own original costumes, though some pre-made cosplays are available for purchase through various stores and websites. Some of the most popular pre-made Evangelion cosplays include the “Evangelion Kigurumi”, the “Evangelion Tokyo-3 First Municipal Middle School Girls’ Uniform”, and the “Evangelion Wetsuit - Asuka”.

Evangelion Kigurumi

These cuddly and comfortable kigurumi suits act like full-body pajamas that are perfect for lounging around in. There are two different designs that are available, one that is inspired by Pen-Pen and another inspired by the instantly recognizable Eva-01. The Pen-Pen suit features the popular penguin’s black and white body and even has his claws on each hand. Pen-Pen’s nameplate can also be seen around the neck of the suit. The look of the kigurumi is made complete by wearing its hood, which has Pen-Pen’s yellow beak, red feathers, and blue eyes. On the other hand, the Eva-01 suit features a design made with the Evangelion Unit’s unique purple and green color palette. The kigurumi also features an iconic shoulder pylon on each side. Lifting up the hood reveals Eva-01’s head, complete with its bright yellow eyes, purple horn, and its slender, elongated chin (which covers part of the wearer’s face when worn). Each kigurumi is also one-size-fits-all, so there is no need to worry about whether or not it will fit.

Evangelion Tokyo-3 First Municipal Middle School Girls’ Uniform

This uniform is a recreation of the girls’ school uniform shown in the Evangelion series. The costume itself includes a white undershirt, a blue dress, a thin red ribbon, and two different pairs of socks (one white, one black). There is a snap-on fastener to keep the dress attached to the undershirt at all times. Each piece in this outfit is made with 100% polyester. This uniform is a great way for cosplayers to play a variety of different female characters from the series. Curious cosplayers could use this uniform to dress up as Asuka Langley Shikinami, Rei Ayanami, Hikari Horaki, or any other of Shinji’s female classmates, as there is little difference in their uniform when they attend school. This versatile cosplay also leaves the potential for cosplayers to create their own original character in the Evangelion universe, if they so choose.

Evangelion Wetsuit - Asuka

This exquisite wetsuit is a part of a line of wetsuits that are all inspired by the designs of the plugsuits worn by the characters in the Evangelion series, specifically from the Rebuild of Evangelion movies. Although suits for both Rei and Shinji were also created, this wetsuit is specifically based on Asuka Langley Shikinami’s bright red plugsuit that she uses when piloting Eva-02. The design features a base of red with accents of orange and blue around the chest area. The arms and legs also use black to create an interesting contrast between the rest of the suit. There is another orange accent on the back of the suit with the number 2 printed on it, a reference to the number of her designated Evangelion Unit. In terms of functionality, the suit itself can act simply as a costume for cosplay, as it accurately recreates the skin-tight design of the plugsuit while adding finer details like interface connections and such. Beyond cosplay, however, this product is a fully functional wetsuit, allowing users to take it out to the beach for snorkeling, surfing, and other water-based activities.

The Evangelion franchise first started out as a single anime television series, but quickly exploded in popularity. While some fans love it for its interesting characters, deeply psychological plot, or unusual metaphorical methods of storytelling, it should go without saying that the franchise went on to become an incredibly influential piece of media in the anime community.
