About Raiden

Raiden was a special forces soldier that resolved the 2009 Big Shell Incident and later worked with Paradise Lost Army. Unfortunately, he is later captured, experimented on, and becomes a cyborg.

About Raiden: Background

Raiden was born as Jack in 1983 in Liberia. He was turned into a child soldier at a young age and was a part of the Army of the Devil unit. He later became the unit leader and earned the nickname "Jack the Ripper" and "White Devil". He is later captured by the Patriots, who place nanomachines in his brain to control him at will. Due to this procedure, he loses most of his memories.

His time as a child soldier greatly influences Raiden’s personality. His time as a child soldier gives him PTSD and continues to haunt him despite the nanomachines altering and taking away most of his memories. As a result, he is cold and distant. He also tends to push those he cares about or anyone that attempts to form a relationship with him. His low opinion of himself is also a result of his time as a child soldier. He suspects that he enjoyed killing people, which enforces his low opinion of himself.

Raiden also shows signs of emotional instability, losing control, and letting his dark side come out. When this occurs, his moral code is heavily compromised and allows him to enjoy murdering his enemies.

About Raiden: Abilities

With harsh training from a young age, Raiden was trained by Solidus and through the Army’s virtual training. The training allowed him to stay calm and adapt under immense pressure. He was also heavily acquainted with all kinds of weapons. It seems that Solidus heavily trained Raiden with swords and blades and has shown great skill in using knives.

After Raiden becomes a cyborg, he obtains superhuman strength, speed, and durability. His newfound power is immense and allows him to carry up to several thousand tons and throw Gekko around easily. In addition, Raiden’s superhuman durability means his entire body is steel and artificial muscle fibers. This makes him almost indestructible and often with self-harm to get himself out of situations. For example, he has previously cut off his arm without a thought to remove himself from the debris.

Other Important Metal Gear Characters

The wide range of characters in Metal Gear Solid keeps the audience engaged. Each character has a unique personality and background, which adds to the story and creates intricate relationships. Raiden, in particular, has a strong bond with Solid Snake.

Solid Snake

Solid Snake is the one who trained and taught everything Raiden knows. He led him to become a soldier and introduced him to weapon usage. While Solid Snake is often harsh on Raiden, he also shows moments of care. He advises Raiden not to waste his youth fighting, as well as expresses regret that he did not teach him better. He also believes that Raiden’s life is a living hell due to the actions of Solid Snake’s generation.

Rosemary

Rosemary is Raiden’s wife. She was initially a data analyst for the Pentagon and then became a spy for the Patriots. The pair initially meet when Rosemary tells incorrect information to a group of Japanese women and is corrected by Jack. They find out both work at the same military base and go on their first date together. She acted as a spy for the Patriots and provided detailed information about his life for over two years. Later on, she starts developing sincere feelings towards him. Initially, Raiden is distant towards Rosemary due to believing he does not deserve her. This was a result of his childhood trauma as a child soldier.
