Synopsis
Set in the future, 50 years after mankind had started civilization on Mars, most people are now complacent with AI-produced music. Carole & Tuesday follows the lives of two young females aspiring to become musicians, an unusual goal in this day and age. Carole is a black girl who lives in the busy hub of Alba City. She works part-time to make ends meet and plays the keyboard. She’s always felt something was missing. Tuesday is a white girl from a wealthy family who lives in quiet Herschel City. No one understands her dream to become a professional acoustic guitarist, and she feels very lonely because of that. The two meet through a chance encounter. They begin to create beautiful music together and feel they just might be able to do something extraordinary.
Background
Carole & Tuesday is an original anime created by Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Kids on the Slope. It is directed by Motonobu Hori (Psycho-Pass, FLCL Progressive) with Shinichiro Watanabe acting as supervising director. The animation is produced by studio BONES, marking the studio’s 20th anniversary celebration.
Watanabe has been hailed as a genius for his ability to blend musical styles and cultural backgrounds in unique ways that define the worlds he creates. In previous works by Shinichiro Watanabe such as Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, music played an important role in setting tone and style, but in Carole & Tuesday, music is a central aspect to the story. Because of this, great efforts were made to professionally compose the original tracks and BGM used in the anime, with a number of composers from around the globe contributing to the project. Songs are performed in English rather than Japanese.
Auditions for the vocalists of the characters Carole and Tuesday were open worldwide. An up-and-coming neo-soul artist named Nai Br.XX from Atlanta, Georgia, USA was chosen as the musician behind Carole and visited Japan to work in the production’s music studio. Japan native of both Japanese and American descent, Celeina Ann, was chosen as the R&B musician behind Tuesday. Both young women have gained internet popularity over the last few years through mediums like YouTube and TwitCasting. Behind-the-scenes footage of Nai Br.XX and Celeina Ann has been released showing the two harmonizing and playing instruments together, recorded by several video cameras as a method to instruct the animation of songs performed by their anime counterparts. Nai Br.XX and Celeina Ann also perform the opening and ending theme songs for the show.

Female lead protagonist of the story. Carole is 17 years old. She was born on Earth but currently lives in Alba City on Mars. She plays the piano and keyboard, and her inspirations include Beyoncé, Adele, and Aretha Franklin. She dreams of becoming a musician. She also loves to skateboard.
Tuesday (Voiced by: Kana Ichinose)
The female lead protagonist of the story. Tuesday is 17 years old like Carole. She was born in Heschel City, Mars, to a wealthy family but currently resides in Alba City. Her inspirations include Cyndi Lauper, Stevie Nicks, and Ed Sheeran. Tuesday plays the acoustic guitar.
Angela (Voiced by: Sumire Uesaka)
Angela is 16 years old and lives in Alba City. She has a pet named Romanov the AI Rabbit. Angela is both a fashion model and a TV personality. She plans to debut as a singer soon and dreams of having her own perfume brand.
Gus (Voiced by Akio Ōtsuka)
Gus is 54 years old and from Texas, Earth. His highest level of education is junior high. He is a self-professed “ace manager” with 30 years of experience.
Tao (Voiced by: Hiroshi Kamiya)
Little information is currently known about Tao, except that he is a music producer known for many contemporary hits.
Roddy (Voiced by: Miyu Irino)
Roddy is a 17-year-old AI programmer and system engineer. He is an otaku who loves sci-fi and mecha anime. His favorite music is the old Vocaloid tracks from back in the day.
Ertegun (Voiced by: Mamoru Miyano)
Ertegun is an egocentric 42 year old voted Top DJ in DJ Magazine Mars five years running. Besides being a DJ, he is also a manager and runs apparel brands. He is inspired by himself.
Dahlia (Voiced by: Kenyu Horiuchi)
Model agent and 43-year-old mother of Angela. She has been managing Angela since she was 3 years old. Dahlia suffers from a Martian disease that makes her gender indeterminate.
Valerie (Voiced by: Tomoko Miyadera)
The governor of Herschel Province and mother of Tuesday and Spencer. She is 47 years old.
Spencer (Voiced by: Takahiro Sakurai)
Older brother of Tuesday. Spencer attends the Mars School of Harvard University. He is part of the yachting club and is expected to take after his mother and become a politician.
