Synopsis
Regular high school boy Hanae Ashiya has a problem. A yokai has attached itself to him and it’s making him very ill. In order to get rid of it, he enlists the help of an exorcist who also operates the Mononokean tea room. The morose man behind the counter, Haruitsuki Abeno, agrees to help but only for a fee. Unable to pay, Hanae finds himself working at the cafe to pay off the debt but is shocked to discover that his new boss is also his classmate!
Background
The Morose Mononokean is adapted from the manga by Kiri Wazawa. The anime adaptation was announced by Square Enix in February 2016 and its first season aired from June to September 2016. The second season premieres on Jan. 5, 2019. The opening theme for the first season is “Tomodachi Meter” by The Super Bell with Tomoaki Maeno and Yuuki Kaji performing the ending, “Tobira no Muko.” Mono palette will sing the season 2 opening theme, “Long Traveller.”
Characters
Hanae Ashiya (Japanese: Yuki Kaji / English: Aaron Dismuke)
Hanae Ashiya is a regular high school boy who enlisted Haruitsuki Abeno’s services to get rid of a yokai which had attached itself to him but being unable to pay the bill is now forced to work part-time at the Mononokean.
Haruitsuki Abeno (Japanese: Tomoaki Maeno / English: Jason Liebrecht)
A classmate of Hanae’s, Haruitsuki Abeno is also the current owner of the Mononokean and a yokai exorcist. Haruitsuki feels great sympathy for the yokai who are trapped in the human world where they are very lonely because humans can’t see them and is determined to help them get home.
Fuzzy
Fuzzy is the fluffy white yokai which attached itself to Hanae and accidentally made him very ill. Having been very lonely before, Fuzzy is happy that people finally noticed him.
Zenko Fujiwara (Japanese: Ayahi Takagaki / English: Dani Chambers)
Zenko Fujiwara is a 15-year-old high school girl whose family run a temple. She is good friends with Hanae.
Yahiko (Japanese: Ikue Otani / English: Brittany Lauda)
Yahiko is a kitsune who has taken the form of a young boy. He loves playing childish pranks.
Kora (Japanese: Yoko Hikasa / English: Janelle Lutz)
Kora runs the Kiyakudo pharmacy in the yokai world and has a strange fascination with human body parts and all the medicines she’d be able to make with them.
Shizuku (Japanese: Chinami Hashimoto / English: Sarah Wiedenheft)
Shizuku is an assistant at the Kiyakudo pharmacy. She has taken the form of human girl but still keeps her newt’s tail! Shizuku is also extremely loyal to her boss, Kora, with whom she is in love.
Rippo / The Legislator (Japanese: Junichi Suwabe)
Rippo is one of three rulers of the yokai world. He is also Shizuku’s older brother and is extremely fond of her.
Shiho (Japanese: Hiro Shimono)
Shiho is one of the three rulers of the yokai world.
Gyosei (Japanese: Koji Yusa)
Gyosei is the third ruler of the yokai world alongside Rippo and Shiho.
