Synopsis
The Promised Neverland follows the lives of several young children living at Orphanage Grace Field House. They live completely happy and fulfilled thanks to the kindness of their caretaker, Mama Isabella. Three of the brightest kids at the orphanage are Norman, Emma, and Ray. The orphans are not allowed to leave the orphanage and see the outside world, without explanation. Norma and Emma learn the terrible secret why, and the kids plan an escape!
Background
The Promised Neverland began as a manga by Kaiu Shirai and Posuka Demizu that launched in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in August 2016. As of November 2018, 11 compiled volumes of the manga have been printed. The manga won the Best Shonen Manga award at the 63rd Shogakukan Manga Awards in January 2018 as was nominated for both the 11th Manga Taisho awards and 22nd Annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. Viz Media is also publishing the manga in English and serializing it in its digital English edition of Shonen Jump.
First revealed in the 26th issue of Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, the anime adaptation is being directed by Mamoru Kanbe with Toshiya Ono in charge of series composition, Kazuaki Shimada creating the character designs, and Takahiro Obata composing the music. The anime is being produced by CloverWorks. It will premiere in Japan as part of Fuji TV’s Noitamina late-night anime programming block in January 2019.
Characters
Emma (Voiced by: Sumire Morohoshi)
The main protagonist of the story. Emma is 11 years old and considered one of the three genius kids in Grace Field. She sometimes disobeys Mama, especially when taking care of the other kids like a big sister.
Ray (Voiced by: Mariya Ise)
Ray is friends with Emma and Norman and another one of the main characters. He is 11 years old and quite brilliant.
Norman (Voiced by: Maaya Uchida)
One of the main protagonists, Norman is friends with Emma and Ray. He is one of the three genius children at Grace Field. He is calm and more polite than Emma.
Isabella
The main antagonist. She is referred to as “Mama” by the Grace Field orphans. She seems very kind but is actually sharp-witted and deceptive.
Phil
Phil is a 4-year-old orphan at Grace Field. He looks up to Emma.
Oliver
Oliver is a former orphan of the Grand Valley Orphanage. He is 17 years old and a strong-willed leader of the Goldy Pond Resistance.
Leuvis
An antagonist. He belongs to a group called the Poachers.
