Synopsis

Fumiya Tomozaki is a high school student and total social outcast who would rather be at home playing his favorite game, Attack Families, than dealing with real life, which he refers to as a “crap game” that has no clear-cut rules, no walkthrough to follow that leads to success, is totally imbalanced, and where nothing makes sense. Online, he is a top-tier gamer who goes by the handle “nanashi” and is always at the top of the leaderboards. However, his outlook on life begins to slowly change when he meets a classmate who is a gamer with as much skill as him.

Aoi Hinami leads the perfect life. She excels at everything she tries, from academics to sports and everything in between. To her, life is a winnable game, and she decides to help Fumiya get his life together by being his walkthrough guide and helping him meet real-life goals. Can Aoi help this slacker gamer level up his life?

Background

Bottom-tier Character Tomozaki is a romantic comedy light novel series written by Yuki Yaku and illustrated by Fly which has been published by Shogakukan under their Gagaga Bunko imprint since May 2016. The series has also spawned a manga adaptation illustrated by Eight Chida that has been serialized in Square Enix’s manga magazine Monthly Gangan Joker since December 2017. There is also a spin-off manga titled Nanami Minami wa Kagayakitai illustrated by Bana Yoshida that has been serialized on Shogakukan's Manga One app since July 2020.

The anime adaptation was announced by Yuki Yaku and Gagaga Bunko in October 2019. The anime is being produced by project No.9 and features Shinsuke Yanagi as director with Fumihiko Shimo handing series composition, Akane Yano handling character designs, Yukari Yasuda handing art design, and Hiromi Mizutani handling the music. The opening and ending theme songs are "Jinsei Easy?" and "Ayafuwa Asterisk" by DIALOGUE+. The anime premiered on Jan. 8, 2021 on Tokyo MX and AT-X, and it is being streamed in North America through Funimation.

Fumiya Tomozaki (Voiced by: Gen Sato)
Fumiya is a high school student with no friends and no girlfriend. He is ranked No. 1 in Japan in the competitive fighting game Attack Families. His handle is nanashi. He meets the Nol 2 ranked player, NO NAME, offline and is surprised to find that she is his classmate Aoi.

Aoi Hinami (Voiced by: Hisako Kanemoto)
Aoi is a popular student and the perfect heroine, but deep down she values hard work and results more than anyone else. She in ranked No. 2 in Japan in the competitive fighting game Attack Families. Her handle is NO NAME. She is a member of the track and field club.

Fuka Kikuchi (Voiced by: Ai Kayano)
Fuka is a girl described by Tomozaki as being a “fairy or angel of the library.” She is quiet and withdrawn but has excellent observational skills.

Manami Nanami (Voiced by: Ikumi Hasegawa)
Minami is the moodmaker of her class. She is a lively girl who is friendly to everyone. She is full of curiosity and often plays pranks on Hanabi. Her friends call her Mimi. She is a member of the track and field club.

Yuzu Izumi (Voiced by: Nene Hieda)
Yuzu is a modern high school girl with a sense for fashion. Though she looks like a gyaru, she has a kind personality and is easy to talk to. She is a member of the badminton club.

Shuji Nakamura (Voiced by: Nobuhiko Okamoto)
Shuji is an intimidating boy who reigns at the top of his class.

Takahiro Mizusawa (Voiced by: Nobunaga Shimazaki)
Takahiro is a refreshingly handsome guy with a laid-back manner.

Hanabi Natsubayashi (Voiced by: Ryoko Maekawa)
Hanabi is a straightforward girl who is always honest about her feelings. She is friends with Mimi and often is teased by her. She is a member of the volleyball club.

Takei (Voiced by: Shuntaro Mizuno)
Takei is a follower type who is big and brawny.
