Synopsis

Peace has reigned in the kingdom of Hortensia for the past 700 years, but all that changes when without warning the land is attacked by the duchy of Camellia. Alfred Albert is the heir to the throne in the duchy of Albert who because of the attack must mature quickly so he can defend the kingdom and lead his people to victory.

Background

Hortensia Saga is a Japanese freemium RPG smartphone game developed and published by Sega and f4Samurai that was released on iOS and Android in April 2015. A TV anime adaptation by Liden Films was announced in December 2019. The anime is directed by Yasuto Nishikata with Norikazu Ishigooka as assistant director, Rintaro Ikeda writing the scripts, Takayuki Onoda designing the characters, and ZENTA composing the music. The opening theme song is "Leader" by MY FIRST STORY, and the ending theme song is "Yaso to Hakuchumu" by Mafumafu. The anime premiered on Jan. 6, 2021 on Tokyo MX, BS11, Gunma TV, and other channels. It is available to stream in North America through Funimation.

Characters

Alfred Albert (Voiced by: Yoshimasa Hosoya)
Alfred is the protagonist of the story and a local nobleman who rules over a remote region of Hortensia. He lost his father, Fernando, in the Lugis Rebellion that occurred three years ago and succeeded him to become the ruler. He doesn’t talk much and rarely shows his emotions but he has a kind personality.

Marius Casterede (Voiced by: Yui Horie)
Marius was rescued by Fernando 3 years ago in the war-torn capital. Orphaned by the war, she was taken in by Fernando. She is strong-willed and competitive, and is not intimidated by anyone. She currently travels with Alfred as his squire and apprentice knight.

Maurice Baudelaire (Voiced by: Kenjiro Tsuda)
Maurice is a battle-hardened knight who was the captain of the Third Corps of the Royal Knights until 3 years ago. He has a passionate, hot-blooded personality but is calm on the battlefield due to fighting in 100 battles.

Nonnoria Foly (Voiced by: Reina Ueda)
Nonnoria is a girl who works for the Albert family. After her parents died, she was taken in by Fernando. She is always cheerful and straightforward. She not only handles all of the housework but also secretly trains with Alfred in sword fighting. She works hard at everything she does, which can backfire on her and cause her to be a troublemaker.

Qoo Morimoru (Voiced by: Aya Uchida)
Qoo is a mysterious creature that can speak in human language. According to some theories, Qoo is said to be a spirit that protects the royal family of Hortensia. The bell attached to its tail is said to only ring during special occasions.

Deflotte Danois (Voiced by: Yuichiro Umehara)
Deflotte is a young man from the village of Petal, located in the frontier of Hortensia. He left his village to travel as a bounty hunter but returned home after hearing of an outbreak of an unknown disease in the village. He is mischievous and always optimistic and is a bit of a playboy with a keen eye for women. Though not overly skilled with a sword, Maurice says that he has surprisingly good instincts.

Adelheid Olivier (Voiced by: Yu Kobayashi)
Adelheid is the adopted daughter of Duke Leon, the ruler of Olivier. Despite her gender, she is skilled enough to have risen to the rank of Temple Knight and currently serves as the leader of the Kingdom Knights. She is strict with herself and others. She regrets that the Duchy of Olivier was taken away from her after her father’s death by the Church of Hortensia.

Leon D. Olivier (Voiced by: Tetsuya Kakihara)
Leon is the Duke of the Duchy of Olivier, one of the two duchies that serves the kingdom of Hortensia. He bears the title of Temple Knight and is one of the strongest of the kingdom’s knights. His notoriety is known not only in neighboring countries but also in distant countries too.

Fernando Albert (Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu)
Fernando is a Kingdom Knight and ruler of the Albert region of Hortensia. He is a great man who became the first Kingdom Knight. Due to various reasons, he gave up his position to live a life of solitude. However, the passion that resides within him has not been extinguished.

Rugis F. Camellia (Voiced by: Kenji Nomura)
Rugis is the Archduke of Camellia, one of the two duchies that serves the kingdom of Hortensia. He is a Temple Knight along with Fernando and Leon and is said to surpass both in terms of strength. He is respected by his subjects due to his bravery and integrity.

Roy Bachelot (Voiced by: Takuya Eguchi)
Roy is a Temple Knight and confidant to Rugis. In the past, he was unfairly punished due to his lowly position as a commoner knight but was saved by Rugis and has sworn allegiance to him ever since. He is honest to a fault and serious, so much so that it can make him inflexible in certain situations. He possesses skills worthy of a Temple Knight is is called the best archer in the kingdom.

Bernadetter Albert (Voiced by: Yuka Otsubo)
Bernadetter is Alfred’s younger sister. She has a weak constitution which she inherited from her mother and is often sick. She has been missing since being involved in a carriage accident and is presumed to be dead.

Alexis Vall d’Hebron (Voiced by: Kazuma Horie)
Alexis is the Pope of the Church of Hortensia. He has been deeply involved in the kingdom’s affairs since the time of the previous king. After the rebellion led by Archduke Rugis, he became the regent to the young King Sharo, solidifying his power.

Didier Viardot (Voiced by: Shuichi Ikeda)
Didier is a Temple Knight who is considered to be the strongest knight of the Church of Hortensia. It is said that his abilities are enough to rival even Fernando and Leon.
