OtapediaDeep-Sea Girl (song by Hatsune Miku)

"Shinkai Shoujo" (深海少女), known by its official English title as "Deep-Sea Girl" was released on September 1, 2010. It was composed by Yuuyu-P. The song appears on the compilation albums EXIT TUNES PRESENTS Vocalodream feat. 初音ミク, V Love 25 -Gloria-, as well as the official album Hatsune Miku "Magical Mirai 2014" official album.
Shinkai Shoujo has over 4 million views on Nico Nico Douga and 7 million views on YouTube.
The music video shows a saddened Miku sinking into the depths of the sea. She sometimes tries to glance towards the surface but mostly covers her eyes or embraces her ears in despair. Towards the end of the video, from the seabed, Miku stretches out her right arm towards the surface with a faint smile on her face. In the final shot, we see the surface of the water from below and a light shines through the water, getting brighter and brighter.
Deep-Sea Girl has been so successful that in Magical Mirai 2016, a life-sized model of Deep-Sea Girl was included in their exhibition to a resounding success. Fans attending the event spent countless moments taking photos of the model, with its "deep-sea" backdrop as well as posing with it and staff that were in charge of its production who were around the area.

Producer's Comments

The girl begins sinking into her pain after being hurt, but is captivated by a single, piercing ray of light. How deep will this deep-sea girl sink?
"Fate" might be too grand a word, but I always feel like every girl's love life probably has some degree of drama. This is the story of one such girl, and her happy ending.

Lyrics

Kanji Romaji Translation
悲しみの海に沈んだ私 目を開けるのも億劫 kanashimi no umi ni shizunda watashi me wo akeru no mo okkuu I sink into the depths of sadness, finding it too much effort to even open my eyes
このままどこまでも堕ちて行き 誰にも見つけられないのかな kono mama doko mademo ochi te yuki dare nimo mitsuke rare nai no kana I'll keep sinking forever, to some place where no one will ever find me

Interpretation

As made clear by Yuuyu-P's comment and the name of the song, Shinkai Shoujo is a song about a girl who has been hurt and is sinking into the depths of pain and despair. As someone who is depressed, she feels that she will continue to sink forever endlessly, eventually reaching a place where nobody else will ever be able to reach her. However, as she continues to sink, she is captivated by a "light" that pierces the dark sea that she is falling into.
The light she notices also notices her, but her fears cause her to run away from it, hiding her blushing face and not having the courage to lay her heart bare again, as something in her past had hurt her into hiding within a shell. She wanted to be left alone, and pushed away the person that came towards her. Once the person actually disappears, she worries and comes out, only to find he had been waiting for her to show herself. As she found someone she wants to know more about, she finally leaves the dark ocean.
While it can be taken metaphorically as a psychological despair, the verse that goes “my clothes are dirty, my smile has also been distorted, I’m in no condition to see anyone, just leave”, may be indicative that the girl has become a shut-in, abandoning her social life after being hurt by a deceitful light, but a colleague or classmate who cared about her insisted on visiting her, hoping to one day see her come out once more.
