supercell is a doujin music band in 2007, led by Japanese musician and songwriter ryo. supercell is comprised of 11 members, with ryo producing the music and lyrics for the group, while the other members provide illustrations and support. They originally produced music with vocals by Hatsune Miku, but have transitioned to human vocalists after signing to Sony Records in 2008.

About the Artist

ryo first submitted his second original song Melt (メルト) to Nico Nico Douga on December 7th, 2007, which became a huge success. ryo used an illustration of Hatsune Miku drawn by an artist named 119 (ひけし, pronounced hikeshi) that he had found on a wallpaper distribution website as the background image for the Melt video. ryo had erroneously believed that the image was free to use, however viewers of the video pointed out that ryo had in fact used another artist's works without permission. ryo e-mailed 119 to apologize and 119 replied showing interest in Melt, which led them working together and the eventual formation of supercell. The group has over 25 million views across all of their releases on the video platform.

In 2010, supercell received the award for The Best 5 New Artists at the Japan Gold Disc Award 2010.
After releasing an additional three singles, supercell released their 2nd album, Today is a Beautiful Day in March 2011. The album debuted at 3rd place on the Oricon Weekly charts.

ryo's music typically has an upbeat band sound with an accompanying piano melody, and extremely frank and pure lyrics. supercell has produced several tie-up songs, including songs for anime such as Naruto, the Monogatari series, PSYCHO-PASS, and Guilty Crown.

Besides producing music by himself, supercell continues to dominate the charts upon each release. 10 singles and 2 albums were released between 2007 and 2010, with many of them appearing on the Oricon Daily charts. Since then, ryo has been involved with over 100 songs, many of them chart-toppers. Their songs have been viewed a collective total of 20 million times.

supercell is currently signed with Sony Music Records.

ryo and Hatsune Miku

ryo's first song Melt in 2007 launched his career. In 2008, he released 6 songs featuring Hatsune Miku and have accrued over 3 million views across Nico Nico Douga and YouTube. Many of the songs were used in the Sega rhythm game Hatsune Miku -Project DIVA-.
In 2009, the band's first album supercell featuring Hatsune Miku sold more than 150,000 copies.

In 2010, ryo composed the theme song for Hatsune Miku -Project DIVA- 2nd titled "Kocchi Muite Baby". Though his music resonates among fans, it wasn't until 2013's ODDS and ENDS that non-Vocaloid fans started truly paying attention. The song featured heartfelt lyrics over rock music that resulted in thousands of listeners becoming Vocaloid fans themselves.
ryo has stated that the only reason he used Hatsune Miku at the time is that he had nobody to perform vocals for him. A friend recommended that he try using Vocaloid. Since his major debut in 2009, it led to him working with several different vocalists, including Yanagi Nagi, Koeda, and currently Ann and Gaku. His band supercell has also previously worked together with EGOIST and Tia.

ryo has been named one of the most influential artists that caused the Hatsune Miku, and Vocaloid, boom.
