OtapediaSaya no Uta - Figures

Saya no Uta boasts a reputation as one of the most disturbing and graphic visual novels of all time. Fans praise its combination of ghastly abomination and an all-consuming romance at the heart. It is both breathtaking and extremely off-putting. The Saya no Uta figure "Saya no Uta Saya 1/7 Scale Figure (Re Run)" captures the game's aura in a single image.

Saya no Uta Saya 1/7 Scale Figure Figure

This hauntingly beautiful figure from WING captures the contrasting visual elements of Saya no Uta's disturbing story. Saya floats midair, held up by a pair of elegant, leaf-like green wings and a tendril of bloody flesh. She looks off to the side wistfully, creating an uncomfortably romantic feel to the figure. However, the bubbling, writhing mass of carnage beneath her nods to her true nature. The whole scene gives the viewer a sense of how protagonist Fuminori sees the world. It's a mess of unimaginable gore with Saya and her beauty in the middle. The petal-shaped sections of her wing feature translucent plastic to give them a sea glass appearance. The green ombre of her hair matches the color of her wings and contrasts with the blood-red mass beneath her.

The Saya no Uta Series Story

Saya no Uta is a horror genre visual novel by Nitroplus. The story involves graphic themes such as body horror, sexual violence, murder, and cannibalism. Fuminori Sakisaka serves as the player character through which players make decisions affecting the story's progression and ending.

Series Overview

The story begins with medical student Fuminori Sakisaka waking up in the hospital after a car accident. While his parents did not survive the crash, Fuminori underwent experimental surgery that saved his life. As a result, he suffers from agnosia, a distortion of the senses. The world around him appears as a horrifying living hell, filled with monsters, gore, and decay. As he contemplates killing himself he meets Saya, a seemingly beautiful and innocent-looking young girl. However, Fuminori only perceives her this way due to his agnosia. In reality, Saya is an indescribably grotesque monster whose appearance drives humans to insanity.

Since Fuminori cannot see Saya's true form, the two fall in love and rapidly form a codependent relationship. Fuminori's reclusion worries his friends, including the timid Yo Tsukuba and her best friend Omi Takahata. When Omi confronts Fuminori for cruelly rejecting Yo's love confession, Saya attacks and consumes her. Fuminori ingests some of Omi's flesh as well and finds it delicious.

At this point in the story, Fuminori has the opportunity to ask Saya to fix his agnosia. If he asks, Saya changes his perception back to normal but leaves, not wishing for him to see her true form. Fuminori spends the rest of his days in a mental institution. Saya calls them and the two profess their love for each other before Saya hangs up to find a way back to her dimension. If Fuminori decides to keep his agnosia, the story continues with Omi Takahata's boyfriend, Koji Tono, discovering her remains in Fuminori's fridge. The player then faces the final choice in the game which leads to either an apocalyptic ending with Saya and Fuminori changing the world or Koji saving humanity.

Series Characters

The player learns very little of Fuminori Sakisaka's life before his affliction. He used to be a normal, sociable person who enjoyed life. However, soon after the opening events of the game, Fuminori becomes depressive, distressed, and suicidal. His only comfort comes from his interactions with Saya. As a result, he clings to her, warping his mental state further.

When Saya came to Earth, she molded her mindset to match the planet's dominant species to more effectively ensnare them. Despite her appearance in Fuminori's mind, she is incredibly young for her species and thus has a largely impressionable personality. Her initial goal is to find a mate and produce mutating spores to transform all of Earth into her species.

The Saya no Uta Series Development

Saya no Uta came out for Windows PC in Japan in December 2003. An English fan-translation came out in 2009 and an official English patch for the PC followed in May 2013.

Series Production

Nitroplus developed the game around a plot written by Gen Urobuchi, who would go on to create Psycho-Pass and Madoka Magica. When the game officially got an English version, JAST USA received distribution rights in North America. In 2014, the game was released for Android systems in Japan. As of 2021, a movie adaptation by Sav! The World Productions is in development.

Series Reception

After its initial release, Saya no Uta received widespread exposure as being "one of the most messed-up games ever released." The English fan translation's popularity led to Nitroplus developing the official English patch using it as a template. In 2010, the game received a three-issue comic book adaptation from IDW Publishing. When Gen Urobuchi's series Madoka Magica premiered in 2011, fans rediscovered his work on Saya no Uta. Urobuchi said the rise in sales felt like the release of an entirely new game.
