Synopsis

2061 AD, in an occupied Japan. The country, and the world at large, has been divided into four economic blocs, and the people of Japan have become oppressed and subjugated in their everyday lives. The country has also become the frontline of the conflict, with humanoid combat machines called AMAIM patrolling the streets. One day, a boy named Amo Shiiba who loves machines meets an autonomous AI called Gai, leading him to throw himself into the fight to reclaim Japan.

Background

Kyoukai Senki is an original TV anime from Sunrise Beyond and Bandai Spirits. It is being directed by Nobuyoshi Habara (Broken Blade, Fafner*, Leina: Wolf Sword Legend) and features scripts by Noboru Kimura (Accel World, Kemono Jihen, Motto To Love Ru), character designs by Kenichi Ohnuki (Flower Witch Mary Bell, Golden Kamuy, Gundam Breaker Battlogue), and music by Rasmus Faber (The Asterisk War: The Academy City on the Water, Harukana Receive, Moriarty the Patriot). Yuya Koyanagi, Kanetake Ebikawa, Kenji Teraoka, and Ippei Gyobu are credited as the mechanical designers, and famed industrial designer Ken Okuyama, who helped design the Enzo Ferrari and Ferrari P4/5 among others, is the mechanical design supervisor. The anime’s chief mechanical animators are Shinya Kusumegi and Hiroshi Arisawa. The anime’s opening theme song is “enemy” by Blank Paper. The anime will premiere in Japan on Oct. 4, 2021 on TV Tokyo and will later be streamed on Bandai Spirits’ official YouTube channel beginning Oct. 6.

A manga adaptation titled Kyoukai Senki: Frost Floweralso began serialization in the September 2021 issue of Monthly Hobby Japan. The manga will tell a different story than the anime.

Characters

Amo Shiiba (Voiced by: Gen Sato)
A 16 year old who isn’t good at socializing. His hobby is collecting parts. While spending his days feeling depressed, he comes across an autonomous thinking AI called Gai and his world is changed.

Gai (Voiced by: Natsumi Fujiwara)
An I-Les (autonomous thinking AI), or in other words, an AI with a sense of self. They are chivalrous and sometimes wild. They and Amo make a good team, both in battle and in everyday life.

Gashin Tezuka (Voiced by: TBA)
A 16-year-old member of the Resistance. He is calm but blunt. He is in pursuit of a mysterious aircraft called Ghost in order to avenge his father.

Kei (Voiced by: TBA)
An I-Les with the same development history as Gai. They inherited data from the tactical AI used by Tezuka’s father. They have a calm personality and a feminine voice.

Shion Shishibe (Voiced by: TBA)
A mature 16 year old who is proficient with a naginata. Following in the footsteps of her potter grandfather, she dreams of reviving Himeno-yaki, a type of pottery that was abandoned after the invasion.

Nayuta (Voiced by: TBA)
A self-proclaimed Italian gentleman who calls himself Angelo. He may sound flippant, but he is highly loyal to his partner, Shion.
