Synopsis

Raised by his abusive uncle and aunt since the death of his parents, young student Mirai Kakehashi grows tired of his life of suffering and decides to commit suicide only to be saved by a guardian angel named Nasse. He is given protection and powers by Nasse and informed that he has been chosen as one of the 13 candidates who will replace God when he retires in 999 days. Making matters worse, he can’t refuse to participate, and among the other candidates are those willing to do whatever it takes to win, including killing off the competition.

Background

Platinum End is a manga series written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata, who are known for their popular series Death Note and Bakuman. The manga was serialized Shueisha's Jump Square magazine from November 2015 to January 2021 and was published under the Jump Comics SQ imprint in 14 collected tankobon volumes. The manga has been licensed for English release in North America by Viz Media, and the final volume will be released in March 2022. As of December 2020, more than 4.5 million copies of the manga have been sold worldwide.

A TV anime adaptation was announced in December 2020 at the Jump Festa '21 online event. It is being animated by Signal.MD and features Hideya Takahashi as first series director and Kazuchika Kise as second series director. Other staff members include Shinichi Inotsume, who is handling series composition, Koji Odate, who is handling character designs, and Masahiro Tokuda, who is composing the music. The anime’s opening theme song is "Sense" by BAND-MAID, and the ending theme song is "Kofuku-Ron" by Yuu Miyashita. The anime will premiere in Japan on Oct. 7, 2021 on TBS and will run for two consecutive cours. Crunchyroll will stream the anime worldwide outside of Asia as it airs in Japan.

Characters

Mirai Kakehashi (Voiced by: Miyu Irino)
A boy who becomes a God Candidate and is given the abilities of “Angel’s Wings” and “Angel’s Arrows” after being saved by an angel named Nasse when he tries to commit suicide. From that point on, he decides to live and be happy. “Angel’s Wings” lets him fly, while “Angel’s Arrows” allows him to shoot arrows that will either kill anyone they hit or make them fall in love with him for 33 days.

Nasse (Voiced by: Yui Ogura)
A special-rank angel who saves Mirai and teaches him how to live and be happy. She is chosen as one of the 13 angels who will determine who becomes the next god of heaven. Though cute in appearance, she can sometimes be cruel.

Saki Hanakago (Voiced by: M.A.O)
Mirai’s childhood friend, love interest, and classmate. She is chosen as one of the God Candidates. She meets Revel after trying to commit suicide by drowning after doing nothing to stop the bullying at school Mirai had to endure and seeing him try to commit suicide himself.

Revel (Voiced by: Natsuki Hanae)
A second-rank angel who helps Saki. He is calculating and manipulative.

Nanato Mukaido (Voiced by: Toshiyuki Morikawa)
One of the God Candidates, who is suffering from terminal cancer. He decides to become a God Candidate out of worry for his family.

Baret (Voiced by: Ai Kayano)
A first-rank angel who helps Nanato and chooses him as a God Candidate. She possesses a wealth of knowledge about heaven and is known as the "Angel of Knowledge."

Kanade Uryu (Voiced by: Kaito Ishikawa)
A high school student and God Candidate who was given the abilities “Angel’s Wings” and “Angel’s Arrows.” He dresses up like the TV superhero Metropoliman. He intends to become the next god by any means necessary, even if it means having to kill the other candidates. His main motivation for becoming god is to bring his dead sister back to life.

Meyza (Voiced by: Kikuko Inoue)
A special-rank angel who helps Kanade and chooses him as a God Candidate. She is known as the “Angel of Lust.”

Hajime Sokotani (Voiced by: Tomoaki Maeno)
A God Candidate who has lived a harsh life since birth.

Balta (Voiced by: Hikaru Midorikawa)
A first-rank angel who helps Hajime and chooses him as a God Candidate. He is known as the "Angel of Intuition."

Mimi Yamada (Voiced by: Kaori Maeda)
She used to be active as an amatuer model named Mithrin, but she currently is known as "Serial Killer Girl A" and is rescued by Kanade after being arrested for the murder of several students. Though not a God Candidate herself, she is given abilities by Kanade and helps in laying a trap for the other candidates.

Mizukiyo Minamikawa (Voiced by: Shoya Chiba)
Kanade’s classmate.
