Alternate Title

マブラヴ オルタネイティヴ

Synopsis

A story of the bonds between people fighting in an extreme world. In one of the countless parallel universes that exist in time and space, humanity has been engaged in a decades-long battle against the extraterrestrial lifeforms BETA using weapons called Tactical Surface Fighters. Trapped in a perilous situation and on the verge of extinction, what kind of lives will humans lead in the face of such a cruel fate?

Background

Muv-Luv Alternative began as a romance adventure game developed by adult game maker âge that serves as the sequel to Muv-Luv. It was originally planned to be released along with Muv-Luv, but âge decided to split the games into two due to how long it would take to develop. After being postponed several times, the game was finally released in February 2006 on DVD-ROM and the following month on CD-ROM. A port of the game developed by âge and published by MAGES (5pb.Games) was released on Xbox 360 in October 2011. This was followed by a PlayStation 3 port, which was released in October of the following year, and a PS Vita port, which was released in January 2016. That same year, an English version of the game with support for Japanese subtitles was also released on Steam.

A manga adaptation by âge with artwork by Azusa Makishima was serialized in ASCII Media Works’ manga magazine Monthly Comic Dengeki Daioh from October 2007 to June 2017 and was published in 17 collected tankobon volumes under the Dengeki Comics label.

A TV anime adaptation was first announced at âge’s 20th anniversary event in October 2019, and the broadcast start date was announced during the “Fuji TV Anime Lineup Presentation 2020” held in November 2020. The series is being jointly animated by Flagship Line, Graphinica, and Yumeta Company and features Yukio Nishimoto as director, with Tatsuhiko Urahata handling series composition, Takuya Tani handling character designs, and Evan Call composing the music. The anime’s opening theme song is “Rinne” by V.W.P, and the ending theme song is "Tristar” by STEREO DIVE FOUNDATION. The anime will premiere in Japan on Oct. 6, 2021 as part of Fuji TV’s +Ultra programming block. It will be streamed by Crunchyroll as it airs in Japan.

Characters

Takeru Shirogane (Voiced by: Koichi Kamiki)
The protagonist. Once a student in a peaceful world, he one day wakes up in a completely different parallel universe where war with the BETA continues and spends three years as a soldier before being killed in action. When he wakes up again, he has returned to the day when he transfers worlds. Using the memories and experiences he gained during his previous loop, he fights once again to save humanity.

Sumika Kagami (Voiced by: Tomori Kusunoki)
Takeshi’s childhood friend and next-door neighbor. She is extremely cheerful and meddlesome. She is not seen in the parallel universe that Takeshi wakes up in.

Meiya Mitsurugi (Voiced by: Karin Nanami)
She excels at close-quarters combat, especially sword fighting, and is extremely noble, stoic, and collected. She seems to come from one of the most prominent families in the empire, but the details are unknown.

The squad leader of the training squad that Takeru joins. She is a strict disciplinarian and has a tendency to stick to her principles.
