Synopsis

A battle for the survival of mankind - Ragnarok. Gods from throughout the world are pitted against the champions of humanity in one on one battles with the first side to win seven battles being the victors. Though it seems impossible, can humanity’s finest warriors stand up to mythological gods and prove that humans are worthy of surviving, or will human civilization come to an end?

Background

Record of Ragnarok is a manga series written by Shinya Umemura and Takumi Fukui and illustrated by Ajichika that has been serialized in Coamix’s seinen manga magazine Monthly Comic Zenon since November 2017. It has been released in 10 tankobon volumes as of March 2021. A spin-off titled Ryo Fu Ho Sen Hishoden began serialization in the same magazine in October 2019 and has been released in three tankobon volumes as of December 2020.

An anime adaptation was announced in December 2020. It is being produced by Warner Bros. Japan and animated by Graphinica. Staff includes Masao Okubo as director, Kazuyuki Fudeyasu handling series composition, Masaki Sato handling character designs, Hisashi Kawashima and Shigeo Akahori handling sub-character designs, and Yasuharu Takanashi composing the music. The anime’s opening theme song is "Kamigami" by Maximum the Hormone, and the ending theme song is "Fukahi" by SymaG. The anime premiered worldwide on Netflix on June 17, 2021.

Characters

Brunhild (Voiced by: Miyuki Sawashiro)
The eldest sister of the 13 Valkyrie sisters. She is half-God, half-human and has a close relationship with humanity. She proposes the final battle between the gods and humanity, Ragnarok, in order to avert the apocalypse. She is intelligent and courageous and doesn’t fear the gods.

Göll (Voiced by: Tomoyo Kurosawa)
The youngest of the 13 Valkyrie sisters. She calls Brunhild “Hild Nee-sama” and adores her, but she is unsure of her true intentions.

Lu Bu (Voiced by: Tomokazu Seki)
A human fighter in the first battle of Ragnarok. He is the strongest warrior in China and is praised by Brunhild as the deadliest and craziest warrior she ever met on the battlefield.

Adam (Voiced by: Soma Saito)
A human fighter in the second battle of Ragnarok. He is known as the “Father of All Humanity.” He was banished from the Garden of Eden after being accused of eating the Fruit of Knowledge by the Serpent God. It is said that he hates gods more than any other human.

Kojiro Sasaki (Voiced by: Kazuhiro Yamaji)
A human fighter in the third battle of Ragnarok. He is a famous Japanese swordsman whose weapon is the two-handed nodachi Monohoshizao.

Thor (Voiced by: Hikaru Midorikawa)
A fighter on the side of the gods in the first battle of Ragnarok, He is the strongest god of war in Norse mythology and is known as the “Berserker of Thunder.” He is the master of Mjolnir, a supermassive weapon that surpasses his own body in size.

Zeus (Voiced by: Wataru Takagi)
A fighter on the side of the gods in the second battle of Ragnarok. He is one of the 12 Olympian gods and the main god of Greek mythology. He is omniscient and omnipotent. He is the king of the gods and the chairman of the Valhalla Council. He also has an unparalleled love of combat.

Poseidon (Voiced by: Takahiro Sakurai)
A fighter on the side of the gods in the third battle of Ragnarok. He is one of the 12 Olympian gods and is Zeus’ brother. He is the Greek god of the sea and fights with a trident.

Hermes (Voiced by: Junichi Suwabe)
One of the 12 Olympian gods and the herald of the gods. He serves his father Zeus as his steward.

Heimdall (Voiced by: Yukihiro Nozuyama)
A god of Norse mythology known as the “Guardian of the Apocalypse.” He is responsible for introducing the fighters and presiding over the battles.

Odin (Voiced by: Sho Hayami)
The supreme god of Norse mythology. He wears an eyepatch and carries the ravens Huginn and Muninn on his shoulders.

Shiva (Voiced by: Tatsuhisa Suzuki)
A god of Indian mythology who is known as the “God of Cosmic Destruction.”

Aphrodite (Voiced by: Rie Tanaka)
The Goddess of Love from Greek mythology.

Loki (Voiced by: Yoshitsugu Matsuoka)
The Norse god of trickery and deceit.

Ares (Voiced by: Hinata Tadokoro)
One of the 12 Olympian gods of Greek mythology and one of Zeus’ sons.

Huginn (Voiced by: Taisuke Nakano)
A raven that is carried by Odin on his shoulder.

Muninn (Voiced by: Tomohiro Yamaguchi)
A raven that is carried by Odin on his shoulder.

Randgrid (Voiced by: Aya Kawakami)
The fourth of the 13 Valkyrie sisters. Her name means “Shield Breaker.”

Reginleif (Voiced by: Rina Kawaguchi)
The seventh of the 13 Valkyrie sisters. Her name means “Remnant of the Gods.”

Hrist (Voiced by: Yu Kobayashi)
The second of the 13 Valkyrie sisters. She is the only one whose name has two meanings: “Trembling One” and “Thunderous One.”
