Synopsis

Less than a century has passed since magic became part of real, everyday life. National Magic Academy's First High School, nicknamed Magic High, is a school for training students in the magical arts. In the spring of 2095, a girl named Miyuki Shiba enrolls at the school. She is a brilliant magic user and the perfect honor student. She and her brother Tatsuya, who enrolls along with her, dream of a peaceful school life together, but she is confronted by a strict hierarchy where talented students named “Blooms” are separated from inferior students named “Weeds,” who are shunned and looked down upon. A younger sister who is an honor student and an older brother who is a reject. Together with quirky classmates and rivals, Miyuki’s high school life as a magic student is about to begin!

Background

The Honor Student at Magic High School is a spin-off to the manga series The Irregular at Magic High School written by Yu Mori that began serialization in ASCII Media Works’ shonen manga magazine Dengeki Daioh in the June 2012 issue. As of March 2019, it has been published in 10 collected tankobon volumes under the Dengeki Comics Next imprint. The series has been licensed for English release in North America through Yen Press.

An anime adaptation was announced after the conclusion of the The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc anime. It is being animated by CONNECT and features Hideki Tachibana as director with Takashi Watanabe credited as assistant director, Tsuyoshi Tamai handling series composition and scenario, Ryosuke Yamamoto and Takao Sano handling character designs, and Taku Iwasaki composing the music. The anime’s opening theme song is “101” by Sangatsu no Phantasia, and the ending theme song is “Double Standard” by Philosophy no Dance. The anime will premiere in Japan on July 3, 2021 on Tokyo MX, BS11, MBS, and other channels. It will be available to stream in North America through Funimation.

Characters

Miyuki Shiba (Voiced by: Saori Hayami)
A first-year student at First High magic high school who enrolled in the spring with high honors. Her older brother is Tatsuya. She is a mysterious and beautiful girl who attracts both males and females with her charm. She calls Tatsuya “Onii-sama” and respects him dearly, but her overzealousness sometimes leads to outbursts. Though she is an honor student with excellent grades and overwhelming magical power among her peers, she worries about Tatsuya, who is treated as an inferior. She is a brocon who shows no mercy to those who look down on Tatsuya.

Tatsuya Shiba (Voiced by: Yuichi Nakamura)
He enrolls at First High together with his younger sister, Miyuki. He has exceptional knowledge and technical skills, especially when it comes to written tests and magic engineering, but due to having subpar practical skills he is treated as an inferior student. He is the eldest son of the Shiba family, one of the Ten Master Clans, and is capable of using strategic magic including “Reformation” and “Matter Detonation.” Due to a side effect of an experiment, he has lost most of his human emotions, but he still has a strong love for Miyuki. He is somewhat naive and tends to set flags with women without understanding their feelings.

Honoka Mitsui (Voiced by: Sora Amamiya)
Miyuki’s classmate in Class A at First High and Shizuku’s childhood friend. She is a top student with honors. She comes to admire Miyuki for her beauty and magical prowess when she sees her at the entrance exam, and wants to be her friend. She is particularly good at light-based magic. She has a crush on Tatsuya.

Shizuku Kitayama (Voiced by: Yuiko Tatsumi)
Honoka’s childhood friend and Miyuki’s classmate. She is an honor student who ranks second only to Miyuki in practical skills. She doesn’t talk much and rarely shows emotions, but she has a passionate desire to win and hates to lose. She is more passionate than others with regard to the Nine Schools Competition and has been coming to watch the games every year since she was a child, hoping to one day participate as a player. Due to often hanging around Honoka and Miyuki, she is concerned with the size of her chest.

Amelia Eimi Akechi Goldie (Voiced by: Asuka Nishi)
A female student of Class 1B with vivid red hair. Her nickname is Eimi. She is a member of the Goldie family, a prestigious British family, and her hobby is horseback riding. She has a strong sense of justice and is an honest person who can express herself earnestly. She is cheerful and amicable and can easily make friends with anyone. Although she sometimes gets carried away and causes trouble for those around her, she is a mood maker among the Course 1 girls.
