Synopsis

Orphaned after his mother was killed when he was a child, Rio struggles to survive in the slums of the Beltrum Kingdom. One day, memories of a past life as a university student named Haruto Amakawa awaken in him along with powerful magic abilities, and he realizes he has been reincarnated into a world of swords and magic. After helping solve a case involving a kidnapped princess, he is admitted into the Royal Academy, a prestigious academy for the children of the nobility. A past life and present life intersect, and a boy with two memories confronts his destiny!

Background

Seirei Gensouki: Spirit Chronicles is a light novel series written by Yuri Kitayama and illustrated by Riv that began serialization on the online user-generated novel publishing website Shosetsuka ni Naro in February 20214. It was picked up the following year by Hobby Japan and has been published under their HJ Bunko imprint since October 2015. As of April 2021, 19 volumes have been published.

A manga adaptation illustrated by tenkla was serialized Hobby Japan’s Comic Fire magazine from October 2016 to February 2017 but was discontinued due to the artist’s poor health. A second manga adaptation illustrated by Futago Minaduki has been serialized in Comic Fire since July 2017 and has been published in six tankobon volumes as of December 2020.

An anime adaptation was announced by Hobby Japan in November 2020. It is being animated by TMS Entertainment and features Osamu Yamasaki as both director and series composer, Kyoko Yufu as character designer, and Yasuyuki Yamazaki in charge of the music. The anime’s opening theme song is "New Story" by Marika Kono, and the ending theme song is "Elder Flower” by Aguri Onishi. The anime will premiere in Japan on July 5, 2021 on TV Tokyo.

Characters

Rio/Haruto Amakawa (Voiced by: Yoshitsugu Matsuoka, Ayaka Suwa (young Rio))
An orphan boy living in the slums of Beltrum Kingdom. At the age of 7, he suddenly recalls memories of his past life as a university student named Haruto who died in an accident. Confused by these memories, an incident leads him to join the Royal Academy, an academy for only noblemen, even though he is a commoner. Due to the memories of his past life, he is more mature for his age and always takes a rational approach. On the other hand, he struggles with the different values he holds from his two lifetimes.

Celia Claire (Voiced by: Akane Fujita)
A talented 12-year-old girl who is a lecturer at the Royal Academy. Although she is a countess, she treats Rio with equality and kindness despite him being a commoner. She is the only person whom Rio can trust. She appears to be a quiet young lady of high society, but she has a surprisingly easy-going personality and is innocent, mischievous, and maidenly.

Aishia (Voiced by: Yuki Kuwahara)
An enigmatic girl who appears before Rio after he recalls his memories from his past life. She teaches Rio how to use magic when in danger. She seems to have lost her memory and doesn’t know what kind of person she is. She doesn’t talk much and always has a sleepy air about her.

Latifa (Voiced by: Tomori Kusunoki)
A fox girl who is kept as a slave by Duke Huguenot. She has high physicality for her race and is sent by the duke to assassinate Rio. She is forced to suppress her emotions and endures a harsh life of servitude. After Rio frees her from slavery and becomes her companion, she beings calling him “big brother” and spoiling him.

Miharu Ayase (Voiced by: Sayaka Harada)
Haruto’s childhood friend and his first love. He had promised to marry her, but they were separated when he moved away. They eventually enter the same high school but are unable to meet again when she goes missing. She is kind and attentive, and although she’s a bit withdrawn she has a strong heart.

Christina Beltrum (Voiced by: Sayumi Suzushiro)
The first princess of the Beltrum Kingdom. She has a brilliant mind and excels in everything she does. She has a strong sense of responsibility as a member of the royal family, but she is also highly prideful and she sometimes gives Rio a hard time. She is very protective of her younger sister, Flora.

Flora Beltrum (Voiced by: Kaede Hondo)
The second princess of the Beltrum Kingdom and Christina’s younger sister. She is the opposite of Christina in that she is timid but is kind and considerate of others’ feelings. She is proficient at healing magic. She owes a debt of gratitude to Rio, who saved her life, and is also interested in him.

Roanna Fontaine (Voiced by: Sayaka Kaneko)
The daughter of the Duke Fontaine and a member of the royal family. She often works with Princess Christina at the Royal Academy. As a duchess, her words and actions can be somewhat overbearing, but this is due to her strong desire to fulfill her duties as a noblewoman.

Alfred Emerle (Voiced by: Kenji Hamada)
The commander of Beltrum Kingdom’s Kingsguard, he is the most powerful knight in the kingdom and holds the title of “Sword of the King.” He is honest and is said to be the model knight, but because of this he doesn't get along well with the aristocratic Charles.

Charles Arbor (Voiced by: Atsushi Tamaru)
The vice commander of Beltrum Kingdom’s Kingsguard. He is the eldest son of the Duke of Arbor, the leader of the aristocratic faction that divides the kingdom in two.

Reiss Vulfe (Voiced by: Koji Yusa)
A mysterious and elusive person who appears whenever Rio causes an incident.

Liselotte Cretia (Voiced by: Nao Toyama)
The Duchess of the Galwark Kingdom. She is a talented young woman who graduated from the Royal Academy with flying colors and founded the Rikka Trading Company. She is an impeccable beauty with an innocent and gentle air, but she has also made a name for herself as the deputy of the trading city of Amande with her calm and flexible thinking and social skills.

Sara (Voiced by: Hiyori Nitta)
A silver wolf girl who lives in the village of the spirit people. She often works with Orphia and Alma and is the leader of the three. She is often teased by Alma due to her earnest nature. She is good at melee combat using daggers. She has a contract with Hel, a spirit in the form of a wolf.

Orphia (Voiced by: Yukina Shuto)
A high elf girl who lives in the village of the spirit people. She has a gentle personality and a soft demeanor, but she is also surprisingly devious and careless. She is skilled with a bow and in all sorts of spirit arts. She has a contract with Aerial, a spirit in the form of a gryphon.

Alma (Voiced by: Asuka Nishi)
An elder dwarf girl who lives in the village of the spirit people. She is younger than both Sara and Orphia. Although she doesn’t talk much, she sometimes teases Sara. She has a contract with Ifrita, a spirit in the form of a lion.
