Synopsis
Plagued with immortality, a skilled ronin warrior named Manji must slay 1,000 evil men as penance for his crime of previously killing 100 samurai. His quest begins when he meets a young girl named Rin who is determined to avenge her family who were killed by a group of master swordsman called the Itto-ryu led Kagehisa Anotsu, but it won’t end until the blood of 1,000 has been spilled!
Background
Blade of the Immortal -Immortal- is a new anime adaptation of the Blade of the Immortal original manga by Hiroaki Samura. The manga began being published in 1993 in the magazine Afternoon and ran until 2012, spanning 30 tankobon volumes in total. The new anime is being directed by Hiroshi Hamasaki at Liden Films and features Makoto Fukami writing the script, Shingo Ogiso designing the characters, and Eiko Ishibashi composing the music. The anime’s opening theme song is "Survive of Vision" by Kiyoharu. The anime will premiere worldwide on Oct. 10, 2019 exclusively via Amazon Prime Video.
Characters
Manji (Voiced by: Kenjiro Tsuda)
A fallen samurai who served the Hatamoto Horii Shigenobu, Manji killed Shigenobu after finding out he was corrupt and was hunted down by his clan. He earned the nickname “Killer of 100” for the pile of bodies he stacked up during this time. He becomes immortal after taking a sacred bloodworm from the mysterious nun Yaobikuni. Finding that he dislikes being immortal, he must now kill 1,000 bad men in order to make up for the 100 he killed in order to be free from his immortality. Though he tries to do good, he often ends up making matters worse.
Rin Asano (Voiced by: Ayane Sakura)
A mediocre swordswoman and daughter of the head of the Mutenichi-ryu sword school, Rin is the sole survivor of an Itto-ryu massacre orchestrated by Kagehisa. Vowing to avenge her family, she sets off and hires Manji as her bodyguard.
Kagehisa Anotsu (Voiced by: Nozomu Sasaki)
Leader of the Itto-ryu, Kagehisa is a prodigal swordsman and forms a dojo dedicated to sheer lethality over form and rules.
Sabato Kuroi (Voiced by: Eiji Hanawa)
A member of the Itto-ryu and a pupil of Anotsu Saburo, Sabato is a skilled swordsman with a number of quirks, the foremost being that he keeps the preserved heads of his former wife and Rin’s mother on his shoulders.
Makie Otono-Tachibana (Voiced by: Houko Kuwashima)
Makie is a master swordswoman and is in love with Kagehisa, whom she saved when they were children. She was born into a samurai family but was cast out along with her mother. She is a member of the Itto-ryu.
Taito Magatsu (Voiced by: Tatsuhisa Suzuki)
One of the top swordsman in the Itto-ryu, Taito was raised as a peasant and vowed to become a swordsman after the death of his sister at the hands of a samurai. He is one of the few who have fought Manji and survived, and the two eventually become friends.
Eiku Shizuma (Voiced by: Shunsuke Sakuya)
Eiku is an immortal like Manji and a skilled swordsman with the Itto-ryu. He wants Manji as an alley to help him take down Kagehisa.
Sosuke Abayama (Voiced by: Shinya Fukumatsu)
The Itto-ryu’s second in command, Sosuke is old but still one of the most skilled swordsman in the Itto-ryu. Being a skilled political operative, he handles the dojo’s administrative tasks. He is missing his right arm and has a weighted chain weapon in its place.
Saburo Anotsu (Voiced by: Yousuke Akimoto)
Kagehisa Anotsu’s grandfather.
Araya Kawakami (Voiced by: Masato Obara)
A mask-maker and member of the Itto-ryu, Araya has a sordid past that he is determined to keep hidden from his son, Renzo.
Kagimura Habaki (Voiced by: Jouji Nakata)
Leader of the Bangashira and secret leader of the Mugai-ryu, Kagimura has incredible sword skills and is the ruthless antagonist of the series.
Hyakurin (Voiced by: Marika Hayashi)
A female assassin and a lieutenant in the Mugai-ryu, Hyakurin is arrested after killing her husband. After learning of her plight, Kagimura releases her and recruits her into the Mugai-ryu. She has blonde hair that she keeps hidden under a wig and she possesses extensive knowledge of poisons.
Giichi (Voiced by: Hiroshi Shirokuma)
The strongest killer in the Mugai-ryu, Giichi led a life of crime until he was caught and recruited by Habaki. He has single-handedly killed 59 Itto-ryu swordsman, making him one of the most skilled swordsman in the series.
Shira (Voiced by: Tooru Nara)
Shira is a cold-blooded killer with the Mugai-ryu. He is a sadistic psychopath who gets pleasure from torturing others. He loses a hand to Manji during a fight and becomes obsessed with revenge, leading him to betray his fellow Mugai-ryu members.
Shinriji (Voiced by: Chikahiro Kobayashi)
A swordsman with the Mugai-ryu, Shinriji is a former pickpocket and thief. He’s not very skilled with a sword but he has high spatial awareness. He develops feelings for Hyakurin after working with her.
Sori (Voiced by: Tomokazu Seki)
Master Sori is a high-ranking spy and ninja who gets into politics due to his obsession with art. He has a daughter named Tatsu. He is friendly and always tries to help others.
Yaobikuni (Voiced by: Ako Mayama)
Yaobikuni is an 800-year-old nun who possesses bloodworms which she gives to Manji and Shizuma. After meeting Rin and hearing of her plight, she urges her to seek out Manji for aid.
