Synopsis
Second-year student Takezo Kurata is the last remaining member of the koto club at Tokise High School following the graduation of the rest of the students. Trying his best to save the club by recruiting more members, Kurata is dismayed to receive an application from well-known delinquent Chika Kudo who once burned down his grandfather’s koto shop. Meanwhile, he also manages to recruit koto prodigy Satowa Hozuki whose expertise proves valuable to the club as they train for the Nationals, but she is also dealing with her own troubles.
Background
Kono Oto Tomare!: Sounds of Life is adapted from the manga by Amyu which began running in Jump Square in August 2012. An anime adaptation was announced in July 2018 and is spanning two cours, with the first having aired from April 2019 and the second premiering in October 2019.
The opening theme song for the second half of the anime will be “Harmony” by Shouta Aoi, and the ending theme song will be “Rainbow” by Yuma Uchida.
Characters
Chika Kudo (Voiced by: Yuuma Uchida)
A well-known delinquent, Chika Kudo has difficulty connecting with other people and expressing his emotions in a healthy manner. Her attitude has shifted since bonding with her grandfather who is a koto craftsmen which has also led Chika to develop an interest in the instrument.
Takezo Kurata (Voiced by: Junya Enoki)
Second-year student Takezo Kurata became the president of the koto club by default after all the other members graduated. A relative newcomer to the koto, he is insecure in his position but begins to become more confident thanks to the support of his fellow koto club members.
Satowa Hozuki (Voiced by: Atsumi Tanezaki)
A talented koto player, Satowa Hozuki becomes a kind of teacher to the others but admits that she struggles with communication seeing as hers is a natural rather than learned ability. She is also dealing with some difficult family issues.
Tetsuki Takaoka (Voiced by: Yoshimasa Hosoya)
Tetsuki Takaoka is an old friend of Chika’s and the one who understands him best.
Mio Kanzaki (Voiced by: Shouta Aoi)
Mio Kanzaki is the head of the koto club at Hakuto High School.
Saneyasu Adachi (Voiced by: Haruki Ishiya)
Affectionately known as Sane, Saneyasu Adachi is a middle school friend of Chika’s. He is also a talented guitarist with a good sense of rhythm.
Michitaka Sakai (Voiced by: Makoto Furukawa)
Michitaka Sakai is a middle school friend of Chika’s. He is also good friends with Kota and Saneyasu.
Kota Mizuhara (Voiced by: Yuichi Iguchi)
Good friends with Michitaka and Saneyasu, Kouta Mizuhara is a middle school friend of Chika’s and a cheerful, positive kind of guy.
Hiro Kurusu (Voiced by: Sara Matsumoto)
Hiro is a female student enrolled in the same class as Takezo. She joined the koto club mid school year and is the vice president. She has an easy-going personality but suffered trauma in middle school due to lies her classmates were telling about her.
Suzuka Takinami (Voiced by: Daisuke Namikawa)
Suzuka is a high school math teacher and advisor to the koto club. She comes from a musical family, with her father being a composer and her mom and sister both pianists, and as such has an unusual talent for composing music herself.
Isaki Kudo (Voiced by: Nana Mizuki)
Gen Kudo's daughter, before his death Isaki promised Gen to look after Chika. She currently lives together with Chika.
Kazusa Otori (Voiced by: Ayane Sakura)
Kazusa attends a private all-girls school in Kanagawa and is a member of her school’s koto club. She is in the same year as Chika. She is strongly opinionated and once she makes her mind up about something she sees it through.
Ousuke Kiryu (Voiced by: Junta Terashima)
Ousuke is a student at a private high school in Tokyo and a member of his school’s koto club. He is in the same grade as Chika. He is a skilled koto player and likes to show off. He also excels at bringing out the talent of other members during recitals.
Akira Dojima (Voiced by: Nao Toyama)
Heir to the Tetsuki Group, Akira is a gifted koto player and mentors the koto club at Hakuto High School.
