Synopsis

In 1274 (Bunei 11), former samurai retainer Kuchii Jinzaburo is exiled to the island of Tsushima by the Kamakura Shogunate. On arriving at the island, Jinzaburo and his fellow exiles are made aware of the real reasons they’ve been sent to Tsushima by the daughter of the island’s governor, Princess Teruhi. At the present moment, Mongolian troops, having already conquered Korea, are sailing fast towards Japan. Jinzaburo and his men are now on the frontline and must defend Tsushima at all costs.

Anime Adaptation

Angolmois: Record of Mongol Invasion is adapted from the manga by Nanahiko Takagi which began in Samurai Ace before switching to Kadokawa’s ComicWalker app in July 2014. The anime adaptation was announced by Kadokawa at their Anime Expo booth on July 1, 2017. The 12 episode first season premiered on July 11, 2018 on Sun TV, Tokyo MX, KBS Kyoto, TV Aichi, TVQ Broadcasting Kyushu, and BS11. Crunchyroll will simulcast the series internationally (excluding Asia, Australia, and New Zealand).

The series’ opening theme is “Braver” by Straightener, while the ending theme, “Upside Down” is performed by SHE’S.

Characters

Kuchii Jinzaburo (Voiced by: Yuki Ono)

Kuchii Jinzaburo is a former samurai retainer exiled to Tsushima by the Kamakura Shogunate. An excellent swordsman proficient in the Gekei sword style, Jinzaburo is also well versed in military strategy and a commander on the Tsushima frontline.

Princess Teruhi (Voiced by: Lynn)

Princess Terri is the daughter of So Sukekuni - the head of the So clan on Tsushima. Unbelievably beautiful, Teruhi makes use of Jinzaburo by ordering him to defend the island against the Mongol invasion but is unafraid to join the fight herself with her trusty bow in hand.

Onitakemaru (Voiced by: Rikiya Koyama)

A large man welding a metal club, Onitakemaru is a skilled fighter but was once a pirate arrested and sent to prison by Jinzaburo, now exiled to Tsushima.

Shiraishi Kazuhisa (Voiced by: Kenji Nomura)

A former steward exiled to Tsushima, Shiraishi Kazuhisa is trusted for his coolheaded calm. He is a particularly gifted horseman.

Cho Minpuko (Voiced by: Shiro Saito)

Once known as the wealthiest man in Hakozaki, Cho Minpuko is a former merchant but was later exiled to Tsushima for bribing officials.

Amushi (Voiced by: Shun Horie)

Amushi is an exile to Tsushima who becomes an asset to JInzaburo, using his night vision and nimble form to gather information on the enemy.

Hitari (Voiced by: Ryota Takeuchi)

A man of few words, Hitari is one of the Tsushima exiles and is particularly skilled with the bow.

Doen (Voiced by: Yusuke Kobayashi)

Doen is a monk exiled to Tsushima who also has extensive knowledge of healing and medicines.

Obusuma Saburo (Voiced by: Kenji Hamada)

Formerly a samurai retainer, Obusuma Saburo was exiled to Tsushima for attacking his brother to steal the family legacy. He is against fighting the Mongols.

So Sukekuni (Voiced by: Hidekatsu Shibata)

So Sukekuni is the head of the So clan on Tsushima. He’s an old man now, but his youthful military exploits have been recorded in scroll paintings, and he’s so proud that the rest of the household is thoroughly fed up hearing about them.

Abiru Yajiro (Voiced by: Tatsuhisa Suzuki)

Abiru Yajiro is the foster son of So Sukekuni and resents fighting alongside the exiles.

Shoni Kagesuke (Voiced by: Shinnosuke Tachibana)

Shoni Kagesuke is the Shogunate High General of the Kamakura shogunate dealing with the Mongol invasion on behalf of the dazaifu.

Nagamine Hangan (Voiced by: Kensho Ono)

Nagamine Hangan is a descendent of soldiers stationed on Tsushima and the leader of the Toi Baranai.

Kaitani Gontaro (Voiced by: Volcano Ota)

Kaitani Gontaro is a retainer of the So household and the bodyguard of Princess Teruhi. He often suffers through trying to council Teruhi against her abrasive manner.

Kano (Voiced by: Mikako Komatsu)

Kano is a servant of the So household and is part of Princess Teruhi’s retinue. The pair are also childhood friends.

Liu Fuheng (Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu)

Liu Fuheng is a Jurchen Vice-marshal.

Uriyanedi (Voiced by: Kentaro Tone)

A kind-hearted member of the Mongolian royalty, Uriyanedi is a Mongol general popular with his men.

Kim Bang-gyeong (Voiced by: Takashi Matsuyama)

Kim Bang-gyeong is the resourceful and experienced Goryeo general.
