Synopsis
When a yakuza makes a mistake, his boss usually asks him to cut his little finger off. However, for three unlucky aspiring gangsters who’ve just cost their boss millions, the price is a little higher. They have two choices: honourable suicide or…go to Thailand and receive gender reassignment and extensive plastic surgery so they can be beautiful idols. The guys agree and become super popular, but this wasn’t quite what they signed up for and the strain of living a double life begins to take its toll…
Anime Adaptation
Back Street Girls is adapted from the manga written and illustrated by Jasmine Gyuh which has been running in Weekly Young Magazine since March 2015. The TV anime adaptation premiered on July 3, 2018 on BS11. The series’ opening theme is "Gokudoll Music" by Gokudolls Nijigumi.
Characters
Airi Yamamoto (Voiced by: Yuka Nukui, with Daisuke Ono as Kentaro)
Airi Yamamoto is 28 years old and was formerly known as Kentaro back in her yakuza days. Kentaro had a crew cut and was known as the leader of the group. Abandoned as a young child, he was raised by his grandfather. These days, Airi is still the leader of the group and has longish brown hair but her beard sometimes grows back if she doesn’t take her hormones.
Mari Tachibana (Voiced by: Kaori Maeda, with Satoshi Hino as Ryu)
Mari Tachibana is 25 years old and was previously known as Ryu during his time with the gangsters. Ryu was something of a dandy with swept back hair and was known as one of the gang’s best fighters. Mari has a stylish blonde bob and is the big sister figure in the Gokudolls.
Chika Sugihara (Voiced by: Hikaru Akao with Kazuyuki Okitsu as Kazuhiko)
Chika Sugihara is 23 years old and was known as Kazuhiko (“Kazu”) while in the yakuza. Kazuhiko had a typical yakuza perm and was a talented boxer in high school. Chika is the typically cute character in Gokudolls and has black twin tails.
Rina (Voiced by: Minami Takahashi, with Shinji Kawada as George)
Rina is 25 years old and a student researching the Gokudolls previously known as George. George was born in the slums of New York and was a member of Italian mafia group, God Money. Having made a big mistake, he was sent to the Inugane to learn about running idol groups and was forced to have full body gender reassignment surgery.
Inugane (Voiced by: Keiji Fujiwara)
Inugane is the boss of the Inugane clan as well as the Gokudolls’ producer. Noticing that there was a lot of money to be made in the idol business, Inugane forced three of his guys to undergo gender reassignment surgery and then turned them into an idol group. He is also secretly married to idol star Natsuko Tanaka.
Mandarin Kinoshita (Voiced by: Junichi Suwabe)
Mandarin Kinoshita is the producer and the world-renowned manager of the Gokudolls. He is also a professor of psychology with many years of study regarding the psychology of adolescent girls under his belt. There is no girl who cannot become an idol star if she has Mandarin Kinoshita on her side. However, as a civilian, Mandarin has no idea about the girls’ origins and suffers greatly through not understanding their thoughts and actions.
Koji Nagata (Voiced by: Yasuhiro Mamiya)
Mobster Koji Nagata is a big fan of the Gokudolls.
Kimura (Voiced by: Natsuki Hanae)
Kimura is a young member of the Inugane who was a friend of the guys when they were gangsters. He’s also the Gokudolls’ chaperone and is a fan of Chika.
Teppei Okamoto (Voiced by: Atsushi Ono)
Teppei Okamoto is 67 years old and the second generation owner of a restaurant which was destroyed because of a TV program the Gokudolls appeared on. He has started a support group for those whose lives have been adversely affected by the Gokudolls.
Yuko Murakami (Voiced by: Ayumi Tsunematsu)
Yuko Murakami is 62 years old and vice chair of the support group for those adversely affected by the Gokudolls founded by Teppei Okamoto. She is against the Gokudolls because her family broke down after her husband and son became fans.
Shinji Takemura (Voiced by: Jun Fukushima)
Shinji Takemura is 32 years old and was formerly the treasurer of the Inugane gang. He was sent off for gender reassignment surgery after being found embezzling, but as his face was a bit creepy they decided to excommunicate him from the gang instead.
Taro Iwamura (Voiced by: Hisao Egawa)
Taro Iwamura is 46 years old and the Inugane gang’s no. 5. However, as a punishment for one of the Gokudolls sustaining a facial injury, the boss forced him to have breast augmentation surgery.
Toru Oguroda (Voiced by: Yutaka Aoyama)
Toru Oguroda is head of the Oguroda gang and an enemy of the Gokudolls. Coincidentally meeting him at a meet and greet, the Gokudolls become angry when they realize he is the cause of much of their suffering. The band’s loyal fans, thinking Oguroda is harassing the girls, eventually carry him off and get him arrested as a pervert.
