Synopsis
Aki Shiina is a shy boy whose feminine looks often cause him to be mistaken for a girl. Hoping to change his life, he decides to move to Tokyo for middle school and moves into the Sunohara-sou lodging house. His new landlady, Ayaka Sunohara, is a warm and maternal woman who looks after her residents as if they were her own children. Aki soon falls in love with her, but the other residents—Yuzu Yukimoto, Sumire Yamanashi, and Yuri Kazami, all female and members of the Tanamachi middle school student council—constantly tease him. Worse, they assume he is a girl…
Anime Adaptation
Miss Caretaker of Sunohara-sou is adapted from the four-panel romantic comedy manga written and illustrated by Nekoume which has been running in Manga 4-Koma Palette since 2014. The anime adaptation was announced in a promotional video for the third volume of the collected manga on Nov. 16, 2017 and began airing on July 5, 2018 on AT-X.
The series’ opening theme is "Bitter Sweet Harmony" by Megumi Nakajima, while the ending theme, "Sonna no Boku Ja Nai" , is performed by Shino Shimoji.
Characters
Ayaka Sunohara (Voiced by: Rina Sato)
Ayaka Sunohara is the kindly landlady of the Sunohara-sou lodging house. Gifted at every kind of housework, Ayaka is a lovely woman who is kind to everyone. Her sense of style is beyond reproach, but she also enjoys playing pranks on people and has a low tolerance for alcohol, becoming kiss happy after a few drinks.
Aki Shiina (Voiced by: Eri Kitamura)
Aki Shiina is a shy young boy from Shizuoka who is often teased because of his feminine looks. Hoping to start again and develop his manliness, Aki has enrolled in middle school in Tokyo, planning to live on his own at the Sunohara-sou lodging house. However, his fellow residents are all girls which isn’t doing much for his manly pursuits, especially as they all tease him and even make him wear women’s clothes. He likes cute things and still believes in Santa Claus.
Yuzu Yukimoto (Voiced by: Natsumi Takamori)
One of the residents at Sunohara-sou, Yuzu Yukimoto is also the chairwoman of the Tanamachi Student Council. Embarrassed over her short stature Yuki wears a headband with a little bird on the top to convince people she’s taller than she is. Yuki has a lot of other worries too, but her grades are good and she’s popular at school. She adopts a haughty attitude towards Aki but is the only one of the residents to know he is really a boy and hasn’t said anything. Yuki particularly dislikes love stories and horror.
Sumire Yamanashi (Voiced by: Asami Seto)
A resident at Sunohara-sou, Sumire Yamanashi is the vice-chairwoman of the Tanamachi Student Council. Sumire is tall and stylish with a cool personality but also likes cute things and has a crush on Yuzu. She will go so far as to follow Aki to the bathroom but has no idea he’s really a boy. She thinks of him as an older sibling and often asks him for advice.
Yuri Kazami (Voiced by: Yume Miyamoto)
Another resident at Sunohara-sou, Yuri Kazami is the secretary of the Tanamachi Student Council. Yuri is always bright and cheerful but often gets the short end of the stick when she sees Yuzu and Sumire arguing. Talented at photography and dressmaking, Yuri is always trying to get Aki to wear women’s clothes and has no idea he is really a boy.
Nana Sunohara (Voiced by: Ayane Sakura)
Nana Sunohara is Ayaka’s little sister and currently in high school. She used to live at Sunohara-sou, has just as good a sense of style as her sister, and had good grades in middle school where she was the student council president. Nana also likes to tease Aki and has a gentle rivalry with her sister, though they get along well.
Mea Uchifuji (Voiced by: Juri Nagatsuma)
Mea Uchifuji is a high school classmate of Nana’s who has a reputation for being “perverted” because of her interest in younger boys.
Maiko Osonoi (Voiced by: Megumi Nakajima)
A schoolmate of Nana’s, Maiko Osonoi is a cheerful girl interested in younger guys.
Nishiki Yatsuho (Voiced by: Shizuka Ito)
Nishiki Yatsuho is the owner of a liquor store which she inherited from her grandfather. A good friend of Ayaka’s, the pair often go drinking together.
Matsuri Shiina (Voiced by: Ai Kayano)
Matsuri Shiina is Aki’s older sister. Though she’s responsible she also has a childish side. Matsuri’s feelings for Aki run to the extreme, and she’s more like a helicopter parent than a big sister.
