Synopsis

In Edo’s Fukagawa ward, brother and sister Oko and Seiji run the rental store Izumoya. As Edo is prone to floods and fires, many people prefer to rent everyday items like pots, pans, futons, and clothing rather than have to worry about them if they have to leave in a hurry. Izumoya is, however, a shop with a difference. Many of the items they rent have already become “tsukumogami” after having existed for over 100 years. Both Oko and Seiji are able to speak to these supernatural beings and sometimes lend sentient items out to customers while other tsukumogami often come to the store just to meet the siblings.

Anime Adaptation

We Rent Tsukumogami is adapted from the 2007 novel by Megumi Hatakenaka. The TV anime adaptation was announced by NHK on Oct. 23, 2017 and premiered on NHK General on July 22, 2018.

MIYAVI vs Kavka Shishido sing the series’ opening theme, "Get Into My Heart," while the ending, "Koyoi wa Yume wo Misasete," is performed by Mai Kuraki.

Characters

Seiji (Voiced by: Junya Enoki)

Seiji runs the Izumoya rental store along with his older sister, Oko. He is kind and quick thinking, much-loved by the local community. However, he is also a little bit timid and sometimes a little bit too nice. The tsukumogami often make fun of him. Seiji is not related to Oko by blood and has developed a crush on her.

Oko (Voiced by: Mikako Komatsu)

Along with her younger brother, Seiji, Oko runs the Izumoya rental store. Oko is a beautiful young woman who is always bright and cheerful so she’s popular with just about everyone in the neighborhood. She is extremely strict where Seiji is concerned. However, once she began to trust him she gradually relaxed.

Sataro (Voiced by: Takahiro Sakurai)

Sataro is a well-known merchant and the young master of Iidaya. An attractive young man, Sataro has attracted the attention of Oko who went so far as to propose to him only for Sataro to disappear that very day.

Notetsu (Voiced by: Toru Nara)

Notestu is a bat-shaped tsukumogami who inhabits a netsuke. He is the only one of the Izumoya tsukumogami who is able to fly and often takes off on his own to gather information unbeknownst to Seiji and Oko. For this reason he is particularly hard on humans.

Tsukuyomi (Voiced by: Yutaka Nakano)

Tsukuyomi is a tsukumogami with a face like a full moon who inhabits a hanging scroll. He is extremely full of himself and likes to repeat various pieces of wisdom to his fellow tsukumogami who find him quite a bore. However, there is a reason he feels so entitled to his superiority…

Goi (Voiced by: Daisuke Hirakawa)

Goi is a tsukumogami inhabiting a tobacco pipe. He has a habit of taking down all the gossip his fellow tsukumogami chatter about, but there are a lot things he hasn’t been able to record. His previous owner before coming to Izumoya was a glamorous geisha.

Ohime (Voiced by: Satomi Akesaka)

Ohime is a tsukumogami inhabiting a doll and is thought to be the most valuable item currently rented out by Izumoya. She was stolen away from her original owner by a bandit and has undergone a long and arduous journey before arriving at the store.

Usagi (Voiced by: Yuka Iguchi)

Usagi is the tsukumogami inhabiting a rabbit-shaped comb. Even within the noisy community at Izumoya, Usagi is particularly chatty and sometimes lets her tongue run away with her. However, she is a warm, gentle, and caring spirit.
