Synopsis

Ordinary school boy Ren Fujii has a falling out with his best friend, Shirou Yusa, and tries to get on with his school life by hanging out with old friend Kasumi Ayase and older student Rea Himuro. However, when the town is suddenly engulfed by a strange series of indiscriminate beheadings, Ren starts to have nightmares about his own head being cut off by a guillotine. For Ren, the nightmares are only an omen of the fear and anguish to come. All too quickly his ordinary days are turned upside down as the town becomes a battlefield. Will Ren be able to survive and regain his “ordinary life”?

Anime Adaptation

Dies Irae: To the Ring Reincarnation is adapted from the visual novel produced by A.C.G.T. The anime adaptation was announced in December 2015, and eventually aired its first six episodes from Oct. 7 to Dec. 29, 2017. The remaining six episodes of the 12-episode series began airing on July 1, 2018. Crunchyroll is streaming the series with subtitles outside of Asia, while an English dub is also available via Funimation.

Voice actress Yui Sakakibara who plays Marie sings the series’ opening theme, “Kadenz,” while the ending, “Opera,” is performed by Junichi Suwabe (Reinhard Heydrich) and Kosuke Toriumi ( Ren Fujii, Mercurius) as the voice actor duo Phero☆Men.

Characters

Ren Fujii (Japanese: Kosuke Toriumi | English: Brandon McInnis)

Ren Fujii ends up in a violent altercation with his best friend, Shirou Yusa, which not only ruins their friendship but sends Ren to the hospital for two months.

Marie / Marguerite Breuil (Japanese: Yui Sakakibara | English: Jad Saxton)

Marie / Marguerite Breuil is a mysterious young woman who appears in Ren’s nightmares. After he meets her, Ren’s ordinary days begin to change.

Kasumi Ayase (Japanese: Ayaka Fukuhara | English: Madeleine Morris)

Kasumi Ayase is a childhood friend of Ren and Shirou’s. She belongs to the kendo club at school, and her best quality is her energy.

Rea Himuro (Japanese: Hitomi Nabatame | English: Trina Nishimura)

Rea Himuro is a year older than Kasumi and is part German. She lives in a church and tends to keep her distance from people.

Shirou Yusa (Japanese: Takeshi Maeda | English: Austin Tindle)

Shirou Yusa was a childhood friend of Ren’s but eventually put him in the hospital after a brutal beating. Following the fight, Shirou ran away and hasn’t been seen since.

Erii Honjou (Japanese: Yoshina Makino | English: Elizabeth Maxwell)

Eri Honjou is a young woman Shirou met in the hospital while he was recovering from the fight with Ren. She may seem like a delinquent but she also has her caring side.

Reinhard Heydrich (Japanese: Junichi Suwabe | English: Dave Trosko)

Also known as Mephistopheles, Reinhard Heydrich is a high ranking German official and the head of the Longinus Dreizehn Orden. After the fall of Berlin he disappeared and his current whereabouts remain unknown.

Valeria Trifa (Japanese: Ken Narita | English: Ian Sinclair)

Valeria Trifa is a member of the Longinus Dreizehn Orden. Also known as Christof Lohengrin, Trifa occupies the third seat of the Black Round Table. Trifa is also a catholic priest and acts as the leader of the 13 in Reinhard’s absence.

Wilhelm Ehrenburg (Japanese: Kisho Taniyama | English: Aaron Roberts)

A member of the Longinus Dreizehn Orden, Wilhelm Ehrenburg is also known as Kaziklu Bey and occupies seat four of the Black Round Table. An albino with a long criminal record, Wilhelm self-identifies as a vampire and finds that his senses magnify in darkness.

Kei Sakurai (Japanese: Kei Mizusawa | English: Brittany Lauda)

Kei Sakurai, also known as Leonhard August, is a member of the Longinus Dreizehn Orden and occupies seat number five in the Black Round Table. Unlike the other members, she looks her true age.

Isaak (Japanese: Hitomi Nabatame)

Isaak is a member of the Longinus Dreizehn Orden and one of the twins born to Lisa Brenner alongside Johann.

Göetz Von Berlichingen (Japanese: Hiroki Yasumoto)

Göetz Von Berlichingen is a high ranking officer in the Longinus Dreizehn Orden. Often known as Machina, his whereabout have been unknown since the fall of Berlin. He doesn’t say much and so carries a gloomy air about with him.

Rusalka Schwägelin (Japanese: Yuka Inokuchi | English: Jeannie Tirado)

Rusalka Schwägelin is a member of the Longinus Dreizehn Orden and is also known as Malleus Maleficarum. She may look like a cute young girl, but in truth is extremely cruel and moody, even sadistic, and actively enjoys torture.

Eleonore Von Wittenburg (Japanese: Asami Yaguchi | English: Alex Moore)

Eleonore Von Wittenburg is a member of the Longinus Dreizehn Orden. Her whereabouts have been unknown since the fall of Berlin. A stern military officer, she is renowned as a great female warrior.

Rote Spinne (Japanese: Koki Harasawa | English: Marcus Stimac)

A member of the Longinus Dreizehn Orden, Rote Spinne (also known as “Spinne) occupies seat 10 in the Black Round Table. A former spy, Spinne is the most familiar with the outside world and can generate razor-like strands of webbing to cut his enemies to shreds.

Lisa Brenner (Japanese: Risato Habuki | English: Caitlin Glass)

Lisa Brenner is a nun living in the same church as Rea and acts like something between mother, sister, and best friend to her.

Wolfgang Schreiber (Japanese: Yukiko Tamaki | English: Mikaela Krantz)

Wolfgang Schreiber is a member of the Longinus Dreizehn Orden whose whereabouts have been unknown since the fall of Berlin. He is also an uncontrollably violent, homicidal maniac.

Mercurius / Karl Kraft (Japanese: Kosuke Toriumi | English: Brandon McInnis)

Karl Kraft, also known as Mercurius, is second in command of the Longinus Dreizehn Orden. He is also the dark magician who created the Ewigkeit and the Black Round Table. Although Mercurius is a close friend of Reinhard’s, the other members view him with fear.

Lotos Reichhart (Japanese: Kosuke Toriumi)

Lotos Reichhart was born into a noble household well known for turning out a great number of executioners. Recognizing himself as a runt of the family, he ran away with the intention of dying in the war.

Tubal Cain (Japanese: Hiroki Yasumoto)

Tubal Cain is a member of the Longinus Dreizehn Orden. He is a terrifyingly large undead creature who rarely acts under his own volition.
