Synopsis

Written and illustrated by Hajime Isayama, Attack on Titan is a dark fantasy and post-apocalyptic series set in a world that is overrun with Titans which brutally attack and hunt humans. In an effort to survive, humans retreat within tall walls until one day the so-called Colossal Titan finally breaches the tallest of these walls, setting off a chain of events that leads to humanity retreating further within the walls until they have no choice but to put their all into fighting back.

Leading the charge is the Survey Corps, a group of soldiers performing the most dangerous missions as they go out of the walls in order to study and battle against Titans while also attempting to expand humanity’s territory, and the story is centered around Survey Corps soldiers Eren, Mikasa, and Armin.

Anime Adaptation

The series was first adapted into an anime in April 2013 with animation by Wit Studio and was directed by Tetsuro Araki. The first season was a success and was followed up with a second season in April 2017 which was directed by Masashi Koizuka with Araki acting as chief director.

Masashi Koizuka has returned for season 3, as well, with series composition by Yasuko Kobayashi, character design by Kyoji Asano, music by Hiroyuki Sawano, and animation once again done by Wit Studio. The new season begins airing on July 22, 2018 and will have a total of 24 episodes.

Characters

Eren Yeager (Japanese: Yuki Kaji | English: Bryce Papenbrook)
The main protagonist of the series, Eren Yeager dedicates his life to eliminating all of the Titans after seeing his mother being devoured by one. Although not the top of his class, he thrives in his cadet class and graduates fifth and goes on to join the dangerous Survey Corps’ Special Operations Squad.

Although he has not learned the specifics of why, Eren possesses the ability to turn into an extremely powerful Titan that thrives in combat. As a result of this ability he has been shunned, kidnapped, and coveted, and he tries desperately to use it to help in his goal of eliminating Titans.

Mikasa Ackerman (Japanese: Yui Ishikawa | English: Trina Nishimura)
Eren’s childhood friend, Mikasa Ackerman is a quiet and brilliant young woman whose parents were murdered by slave traders when she was a young girl. She is saved by Eren who fights them to protect her and she ends up living with and growing up alongside him. As a result, she is very loving and protective towards Eren.

Her abilities exceed even Eren’s, and she graduates at the top of their cadet class. Other officers regard her as a prodigy for her skill in battle and it truly shows, and all of that talent is focused entirely on protecting Eren.

Armin Arlert (Japanese: Marina Inoue | English: Josh Grelle)
Another childhood friend of Eren’s, Armin has always been shy and weak, but he truly shines in intelligence and curiosity. He always wanted to see outside of the walls and was inspired by Eren’s confidence which led to him finding his own strengths.

Primary among these strengths is his strategic talent. Despite being physically weak, he is a genius at battle strategy and is frequently the reason for his group’s success. He also cares deeply for his friends.

Jean Kirstein (Japanese: Kisho Taniyama | English: Mike McFarland)
A difficult trouble-maker, Jean originally joined his cadet class with the goal of joining the Military Police to enjoy a safe and peaceful life within Wall Sheena. He is skilled, as well, graduating sixth in his class. After the death of his friend Marco, however, he joins the Survey Corps alongside Eren and the others.

Sasha Blouse (Japanese: Yu Kobayashi | English: Ashly Burch)
Best known for her love of potatoes, Sasha is a hunter with extraordinary instincts who is inspired by Eren’s determination which leads to her joining the Survey Corps, as well. She was frequently left hungry growing up due to struggling to find food which leads to a complete lack of control towards food, going as far as to steal it.

Krista Lenz (Japanese: Shiori Mikami | English: Bryn Apprill)
Small, cute, and sweet, the lovely Krista Lenz is adored by all of those around her. She did well as a trainee, as well, ranking 10th upon graduation. She is also, however, a girl of many mysteries...

Connie Springer (Japanese: Hiro Shimono | English: Clifford Chapin)
Despite his small stature, Connie Springer is energetic, upbeat, and brave. He did well in training, ranking eighth upon graduation, but chose the Survey Corps over the Military Police just like the others upon hearing Eren’s speech about eliminating the Titans.

Levi (Japanese: Hiroshi Kamiya | English: Matthew Mercer)
One of the most popular characters of the series, Levi is humanity’s strongest soldier and the leader of the elite Survey Corps squad. In addition to being a phenomenally talented soldier, he is also extremely clean and disciplined. Eren has a great deal of respect and admiration for him.

Erwin Smith (Japanese: Daisuke Ono | English: J. Michael Tatum)
Erwin is the Survey Corps commander and leads the squad with bravery during its most dangerous missions. He and Levi understand each other well and place a lot of trust in each other.

Hans Zoe (Japanese: Romi Park | English: Jessica Calvello)
Perhaps the most eccentric character within the Survey Corps, Hans is a squad leader and scientist with a deep-running love of Titans and believes that they have the ability to think, giving each Titan a unique personality.
